Specialists agreed on this statement at the Marine Sustainability Conference, organized by the National Fisheries Society, where the habitat and conditions of this resource were discussed.

Lima - Peruvian Jack Mackerel, one of the most important fisheries in Peru, has shown an increase in the Peruvian stock (Far-north), said international experts during their participation in the Marine Sustainability Conference, called "The habitat of the peruvian jack mackerel in the current Peruvian”, organized in a virtual way by the National Fisheries Society (SNP).

Jorge Csirke, former director of FAO Fisheries Management, indicated that there is a real increase in the biomass of this resource, which is evidenced not only by the higher catches of the Peruvian fishing fleet, but also by other indicators. He also highlighted the need to expand knowledge of peruvian jack mackerel habitat for better efficiency in fishing operations as well as scientific evaluations and explorations of the resource.

“From what we have seen with IMARPE, in the last two years there is various evidence of the increase in the population of peruvian jack mackerel off the coast of Peru. Before, the trend was flat and abundance and catches were very low. In part, the best catches in the last two years are due to the fact that the resource has been concentrated and has come closer to the coast due to environmental factors”, he assured.

Likewise, the renowned scientist indicated that there are also other indicators that the peruvian jack mackerel stock would be in good health, such as the size structure with the presence of several annual classes, with juveniles and adults; higher acoustic biomass indices, among others. "If the resource continues to be managed as it has been until now, it is probable that in the coming years we can continue to have a sustainable peruvian jack mackerel fishery," he added.

The Sustainability Conferences organized by the fishing union are scientific and technical forums that serve to disseminate knowledge about the oceans and ecosystems for the sake of sustainability. In the case of peruvian jack mackerel habitat, the conference carried out evaluated its variability, and the availability and management of information for the implementation of concrete improvements and thus make the exploitation of the resource sustainable.

During the virtual conference, the head of the SNP, Cayetana Aljovín; the president of the Scientific Committee of the Humboldt Institute for Marine and Aquaculture Research (IHMA), Francois Gerlotto; the president of the Waveningen University and Research (WUR), Niels Hintzen; and the Scientific Researcher, Ricardo Oliveros. The closing was in charge of Ricardo Bernales, President of the Board of the IHMA and Vice President of the SNP.
