Official data on prices and markets for imports of bigeye tuna

The average price of Japanese imports of frozen bigeye was JPY 788 in May, similar value on that of the previous month and down 3% on that of May 2018.
During the first five months of the year, the average was JPY 786/kg, down 7% on that of the same period last year.

The price of fresh bigeye in markets in Japan, as of July 19, had a minimum of JPY 1,200/kg for the imported from Australia and a maximum of 3,000 for that of South Africa (Cape Town).

Markets
During the month analysed, imports of frozen bigeye reached 3,931 tonnes, worth JPY 3,096 million, down 22% in volume and value on those registered in the previous month and down 8% in volume and 10% in value on those of May 2018.

During the period, imports totalled 21,079 tonnes and JPY 16,560 million, down 12% in volume and 18% in value on those of the same period last year.
The 55% of imports were from Taiwan (11,685 tonnes) while those from China amounted to 22% (4,641 tonnes).
