The representatives of the European Commission and Senegal have agreed to renew the fishing agreement for five more years, which also increases the fishing opportunities for the Spanish fleet from the current 25 to 28 of a total of 45 offered.
The protocol ended on November 19, so the renewal of the agreement „of interest to Spain“ has been positively valued by the acting Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, who stressed that this will allow the permanence of Spanish ships in the Senegalese fishing ground.
The port has one of the largest deep-water seaports along the West African coast. Its deep-draft structure and 640-foot-wide (200 m) access channel allows round-the-clock access to the port. Its current infrastructure includes tanker vessel loading and unloading terminals, a container terminal with a storage capacity of 3000 20-foot-equivalent units, a cereals and fishing port.
In addition, he stressed that the pact, which especially benefits ships from Galicia, the Basque Country and the Canary Islands, guarantees "stability and future security" for ships fishing in African Atlantic waters.
The agreement offers 45 licenses for EU ships, of which at least 28 will be for Spanish ships, once distributed. As a novelty, a new category is established for five surface longliners, which will be divided between Spain and Portugal.
