Officials and scientists from Argentina and the United Kingdom participated in a new meeting of the Scientific Subcommittee of the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission (CPAS) established by the Joint Declaration of November 28, 1990, which was held in Buenos Aires on the 17th and July 18.
During the two days, both delegations continued the dialogue on topics of mutual interest in the field of scientific cooperation for the conservation of fishery resources in the southwestern Atlantic, reported the Argentine Foreign Ministry.

The discussions focused on the evaluation of the activities already implemented, such as the mechanism to exchange scientific data launched in December 2018 and the scientific joint cruise on squid conducted in February this year. Likewise, the technical details of the scientific cruise on the Southern blue whiting species to be carried out in September 2019 were completed.
The competing claims of Argentina and the United Kingdom to sovereignty over the Falkland/Malvinas Islands are well known. The two States also claim sovereignty over South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, the South Orkney Islands and a significant portion of the Antarctic continent - although claims south of 60° South are frozen under the terms of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty. The delegations agreed that the next meeting will be held in Buenos Aires in November this year.
The formula on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas is applied to both the meeting and its results, agreed by both governments in point 2 of the Joint Declaration of Madrid on October 19, 1989.
