EU sanitary authority approves control systems for bivalve mollusks

The Directorate General of Health and Food Safety of the European Union (DG SANTE) has approved the audit carried out by a specialized team of that entity in the country to the production chain of live bivalve mollusks, such as scallops.

Minister of Production Raúl Pérez-Reyes said that the European body considered the sanitary control systems set by the National Fisheries Health Agency (SANIPES) of the Ministry of Production in order to ensure the safety of bivalve mollusks exportable to the EU market are satisfactory.

He explained that DG SANTE communicated these conclusions through a letter addressed to SANIPES, after assessing the sanitary measures that were adopted as a result of the audit carried out between September 25 and October 5, 2017.

The Ministry of Production recalls that in this audit process, DG SANTE made nine recommendations, from which an action plan was implemented with measures that made it possible to strengthen SANIPES' health surveillance and control system, which have resulted satisfactory to the European authority.

Pérez-Reyes highlighted the full willingness of DG SANTE and SANIPES to carry out the implementation of these measures, through a permanent communication.

For his part, SANIPES executive director Ernesto Bustamante said that the decision of the community health authority strengthens Peruvian fish exports to a large and demanding market such as the EU.

He also stressed that this response from SANIPES to the recommendations of DG SANTE increases the confidence of the European health authority in Peru´s health authority.

Bustamante recalled that, during his visit to Peru during the audit in 2017, the European team visited different production areas and companies related to the processing of live bivalve mollusks for ten days.

The main scallop producing areas are Sechura (Piura), Chimbote (Ancash) and Pisco (Ica).
