Facilitating trade between Chile and the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) is the objective of the new electronic certification system which will start to be implemented next month for salmon exports from Chile.
The new platform was announced by SERNAPESCA national director José Miguel Burgos, in the framework of a visit to Russia he is performing together with SERNAPESCA deputy director of Foreign Trade Monica Rojas. Eventually, the fishing authority handed over the document that formalizes the start of the white march of the new system from August 1.
With this measure, shipments of products made from salmon add to pork exported by Chile to the Eurasian giant, which was the first product to join this agreement last year.
Burgos defined this program as "a tremendous achievement that reflects the destination markets’ trust in Chile's control and certification systems." In this sense, he emphasized that "there are very few examples of such electronic systems, accepted by countries with standards that are as stringent as those of the Eurasian Economic Union."
In practice, this progress will mean that the Rosselkhoznadzor (official health service of Russia) will validate the certificates electronically issued by SERNAPESCA, which will considerably streamline the procedures for entry to the destination market. Likewise, it allows direct communication between the authorities of both countries, raising the security standards of this procedure.
Rojas recalled that this initiative was born in June 2014 during the Meeting of the Russian-Chilean Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation. At that time, the Russian veterinary service signed a cooperation agreement on electronic certification for livestock and fishery products with the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and SERNAPESCA.
Chile annually exports about 70,000 tonnes of fishery resources to Russia, of which more than 63,000 tonnes correspond to shipments of salmon (mainly Atlantic salmon), all worth more than USD 300 million.
