Strong Performance in North Sea Herring Fishery Across Norwegian Zone

Diverse catch sizes benefit both the fillet industry and reduction plants as mackerel and blue whiting remain steady.

North Sea Herring

The North Sea herring (Clupea harengus) fishery recorded another highly productive week, characterized by extensive operations spanning a vast territory within the Norwegian economic zone, alongside minor catches reported from the UK zone just east of Shetland.

According to the latest fleet data, a total volume of 16,680 tonnes of North Sea herring was registered last week. Out of this total, 10,241 tonnes were directed toward human consumption, while 6,439 tonnes were allocated for reduction to fishmeal and fish oil.

The geographic distribution of the fleet shifted significantly throughout the week. Operations commenced around the Vikingbanken region before moving northward toward the Statfjord field. Analysts noted a direct correlation between latitude and fish size: the herring caught further north exhibited a larger average weight, providing a much-needed boost to the fillet processing sector, which has faced a sustained demand for larger raw materials. The average weight for consumption-grade herring rose to 149 grams, marking a 9-gram increase compared to the previous week.

Conversely, activity in the northern grounds decelerated heading into the weekend, prompting vessels to relocate south toward the Patchbanken area. The herring schools in this southern sector consisted of significantly smaller specimens, averaging between 115 grams and 120 grams. Consequently, the majority of the volume from this area was routed to the fishmeal and fish oil processing industry.

Coastal Mackerel Fleet Maintains Steady Local Landings

The small-scale coastal fleet targeting Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) sustained stable activity, reporting total landings of 84.3 tonnes.

Catches were distributed across a wide coastal range, stretching from the municipality of Alver in Vestland county in the north, down to Strand municipality in Rogaland county in the south. The quality of the landings remained high, with the average weight categorized by market destination: 360 grams for specimens destined for freezing, and 402 grams for the fresh seafood market.

Blue Whiting Landings Remain Modest Along the Continental Slope

Industrial fishing for blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) saw limited but steady activity over the past week.

A total of 3 vessels reported catches from the traditional grounds along "Kanten" (the continental slope). The combined volume landed by these vessels amounted to 1,280 tonnes for the period.

Danish Vessels Deliver Sandeel Catches from Southern North Sea Grounds

The sandeel (Ammodytidae) fishery saw activity from international fleets operating in the southern reaches of the North Sea.

On Sunday, 2 Danish vessels registered a combined total of 1,357 tonnes of sandeel. The catches were harvested in the southernmost sectors of the North Sea basin, in close proximity to the Dutch coast.
