Global Pollock Market Faces Supply Squeeze as Raw Material Prices Surge to Historic Highs

WORLDWIDE
Monday, June 08, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

Small Fish Sizes and Shifting Trade Flows Drive Up Production Costs for Global Surimi and Fillet Traders

The global Alaska pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) market is experiencing an unprecedented price surge, forcing a major cost reassessment across the entire international seafood supply chain. According to industry data sourced from Food World (Beijing), the cost of raw materials has reached historic highs in early June 2026, driven by a tightening supply of mainstream fish sizes, low weekly catches, and a structural realignment of global trade routes.

During week 23, the CFR price for 25+ head-and-gutted (H&G) pollock heading to Asian processing hubs escalated by over $100/ton week-on-week, hitting a record-breaking $2,280/ton. Russian sellers have pushed target prices for the newly opened Western Bering Sea fishing season—which commenced on May 16—to approximately $3,100/ton. This represents an aggressive $900/ton or 62% increase compared to the same period last year, intensifying fierce price negotiations with international buyers.

Size Deficit and Catch Shortfalls Limit Supply

A primary catalyst for the skyrocketing raw material cost is the slow progress and unfavorable size distribution of the current harvest.

  • Catch Volume Deficit: As of May 25, the total pollock catch stood at approximately 1.1066 million tons, tracking significantly lower than the 1.1447 million tons recorded during the identical period in 2025.

  • Mainstream Size Scarcity: Smaller fish under 20+ cm currently comprise 35% to 40% of the Western Bering Sea catch, contrasted against a historical baseline of just 15% to 20% in normal years.

This severe shortage of larger, mainstream fish sizes has severely constrained the production of premium blocks and heavily impacted global surimi traders who rely on stable raw material specifications.

Trade Flow Realignment and Processing Realities

Geopolitical factors and trade restrictions continue to reshape global distribution. The US ban on Russian-sourced raw materials has restricted the flow of Chinese-processed pollock fillets into the American market. Consequently, trade flows are shifting heavily toward Europe and Asian domestic markets.

Data from the first quarter of 2026 highlights this price-driven effect clearly. Total import volumes of frozen pollock to Asian processing hubs reached 195,697 tons—ranking only ninth in volume since 2012—yet the total import value spiked to a record high of $314.6 million. The average import price for the first quarter hovered at an elevated $1,607/ton. March 2026 statistics underscored extreme market consolidation, with Russian raw materials representing 97.6% of the volume and 97.2% of the total value ($194.8 million out of $200.4 million) entering major regional processing clusters, while the US supplied just 2,116 tons.

Impact on Downstream Surimi and Fillet Margins

The surge in H&G costs is rapidly compounding financial pressures for global producers of fish fillets, surimi, and block-frozen products. Prices for re-frozen PBO (pin-bone out) blocks, CFR Europe quotes, and European cold storage deliveries have all moved upward.

Major processing entities, such as Joyvio Foods' subsidiary Guoxing Foods, reported a revenue increase of 12.1% in the first quarter, reaching RMB 194 million (approx. $27 million). However, due to surging raw material costs outpacing initial contract pricing, the company's gross profit margin contracted by 7.9 percentage points.

While downstream contract prices are beginning to adjust upward to offset the raw material squeeze, market experts in major processing sectors note a distinct time lag in finished product price adjustments. Traders are increasingly pivoting away from low-margin price wars, focusing instead on high-value-added seafood items—such as Grade A pollock surimi crab sticks—to absorb production and labor costs in a structural market environment where high-quality raw materials are projected to remain costly for the foreseeable future.
