Japan's Bigeye Tuna Imports Surge to Narrow Deficit

Rising Shipments from Taiwan and Seychelles Offset Shortfalls as Import Prices Peak at ¥1,170/kg

TOKYO — Official trade data indicates a significant shift in the Japanese seafood market as suppliers move aggressively to restore volume. According to April trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance alongside March inventory figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), active movements aimed at restoring volume through bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) imports have emerged, narrowing the year-on-year cumulative deficit.

Overall April bigeye tuna imports stood at 6,060 tons, representing a substantial increase from the 4,812 tons recorded in April of the previous year. This late-spring surge brought the cumulative yearly total up to 18,025 tons. While this overall figure still reflects a 9% drop compared to the 19,718 tons imported during the same period last year, it shows a notable contraction from the severe 20% deficit reported just a month earlier as of March.

By country of origin, cumulative imports from Taiwan reached 10,845 tons, a slight increase of 1% compared to last year's 10,770 tons, cementing its position as a primary supplier. Furthermore, surges in shipments from the Seychelles significantly offset prior shortfalls, balancing the broader procurement stream.

However, the volume recovery comes at a premium, as procurement costs remain elevated. Import prices have risen continuously during the current fiscal year, starting at ¥955/kg ($6.12/kg) in January, advancing to ¥1,060/kg ($6.79/kg) in February, rising to ¥1,092/kg ($7.00/kg) in March, and reaching a peak of ¥1,170/kg ($7.50/kg) in April. Consequently, the cumulative average price now stands at ¥1,086/kg ($6.96/kg), which is a whopping 50% higher than last year's low average of ¥726/kg.
