Low catch availability drives wild cod and clipfish to multi-decade lows, while farmed product gains unprecedented ground.

The Norwegian Seafood Council (Norges Sjømatråd) has revealed a widespread and severe contraction in cod (Gadus morhua) exports during the month of May. Tight catch quotas and low landing volumes led to double-digit declines across the fresh, frozen, salted, and dried segments. In this scenario of scarcity, aquaculture seafood products have taken on a historic role in sustaining the Nordic country's foreign trade.

Fresh Seafood: Severe Decline in Wild Volume Offset by Aquaculture

  • Norway exported 2,012 tonnes of fresh cod worth NOK 168 million in May
  • The value fell by NOK 43 million, or 20 percent, compared to the same month last year.
  • Volume fell by 31 percent
  • Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland were the largest markets for fresh cod in May

Total exports of fresh cod reached 2,012 tonnes with a value of NOK 168 million (approx. US$ 15.29 million) during May. These figures represent a 20% drop in economic value (a loss of NOK 44 million / approx. US$ 400,000) and a 31% reduction in total volume compared to the same period last year. Denmark, the Netherlands, and Poland remained the primary transit and processing markets heading to the rest of the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The breakdown by origin reflects contrasting realities:

  • Fresh Wild Cod: Export volume plummeted 52%, standing at just 808 tonnes, while its value fell 39% to NOK 76 million (approx. US$ 692,000). Eivind Hestvik Brækkan, seafood analyst at the Norwegian Seafood Council, noted that this volume of 808 tonnes represents the lowest level recorded for a month of May since 1995, a direct consequence of this month's fishing landings being the lowest since the turn of the millennium.

  • Fresh Farmed Cod: Conversely, the aquaculture sector showed resilience. Volume only receded 1% to sit at 1,204 tonnes, while export value grew 8%, reaching NOK 92 million (approx. US$ 837,000).

For the first time in a month of May, and for the ninth time in the overall historical record, farmed cod accounted for more than half of the foreign trade of this fresh product, commanding 55% of the total export value. Official projections suggest that this trend will hold for the remainder of the year.

Frozen Cod: British Market Cuts Purchases by Half

  • Norway exported 2,061 tons of frozen cod worth NOK 211 million in May
  • The value fell by NOK 68 million, or 24 percent, compared to the same month last year.
  • Volume fell by 37 percent
  • The UK, Vietnam and China were the largest markets for frozen cod in May

Source: Norwegian Seafood Council

The frozen segment recorded exports of 2,061 tonnes for an aggregate value of NOK 211 million (approx. US$ 19.20 million). This represents a 24% drop in value (NOK 68 million / approx. US$ 619,000 less) and a 37% decrease in volume compared to May of the previous year. The main destinations for this category were the United Kingdom, Vietnam, and China.

The British market, traditionally the largest recipient of frozen products, cut its imports nearly in half, purchasing only 610 tonnes. According to Brækkan's analysis, high prices stemming from shortages have forced value chains in the UK to seek viable alternatives for consumers, leading to a notable increase in the import of South African hake (Merluccius capensis / Merluccius paradoxus), locally known as lysing.

Clipfish and Salted Fish: 27-Year Commercial Lows

  • Norway exported 2,060 tons of clipfish worth NOK 226 million in May
  • The value fell by NOK 114 million, or 34 percent, compared to the same month last year.
  • Volume fell by 44 percent
  • Portugal, Brazil and Congo-Brazzaville were the largest markets for clipfish in May

Source: Norwegian Seafood Council

Clipfish production (salted and dried fish) suffered one of the hardest hits of the season due to a lack of raw materials for both cod and saithe (Pollachius virens). In total, 2,060 tonnes of clipfish were exported for a value of NOK 226 million (approx. US$ 20.57 million), a reduction of 34% in value and 44% in volume.

  • Sainte Clipfish: Volume fell 37% (1,025 tonnes) and value dropped 19% (NOK 76 million / approx. US$ 692,000).

  • Cod Clipfish: Volume contracted 55% (661 tonnes) and value decreased 43% (NOK 120 million / approx. US$ 1.09 million).

Statistical records have not shown such a low monthly export volume for clipfish since 1999. The main destination markets were Portugal, Brazil, and Congo-Brazzaville. Brazil stood out as the sole exception for value growth, increasing 21% to add NOK 5 million (approx. US$ 45,500), even though its imported volume fell 18% (245 tonnes).

Source: Norwegian Seafood Council

Meanwhile, salted fish posted 2,587 tonnes exported for a value of NOK 387 million (approx. US$ 35.22 million) (a 5% drop in value and 25% in volume). Cod accounts for more than 90% of this category. Excluding the anomalies of the pandemic year (2020), volumes for May are the lowest since 2009, and historically represent the lowest year-to-date cumulative total since 1990. Portugal maintained its absolute dominance in this segment by absorbing 99% of the total volume; there, the volume contraction was 22%, but a sharp increase in the export price cushioned the value drop to just 1% (NOK 370 million / approx. US$ 3.36 million).

Stockfish: Drastic Slowdown in Italy

  • Norway exported 87 tons of stockfish worth NOK 16 million in May
  • The value fell by NOK 39 million, or 71 percent, compared to the same month last year.
  • Volume fell by 58 percent
  • Italy, Nigeria and the UK were the largest markets for stockfish in May

Stockfish exports totaled just 87 tonnes for a value of NOK 16 million (approx. US$ 145,000), equivalent to a 71% plunge in value and a 58% drop in volume compared to the previous year. The main destinations were Italy, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom.

Source: Norwegian Seafood Council

The market structure shifted drastically in May: the product with the highest volume was tusk stockfish (Brosme brosme) at 35 tonnes, surpassing the meager 27 tonnes of cod stockfish. As a result, shipments to Italy fell to extreme lows: only 16 tonnes of cod stockfish were exported there for a value of NOK 7 million (approx. US$ 63,700), suffering a contraction of 82% in volume and 78% in economic value. In contrast, Nigeria led the sector's growth with a 116% surge in value (NOK 3 million / approx. US$ 27,300) and a 76% increase in volume, totaling 45 tonnes.
