The Company Absorbs Catch Surges Stemming from Climate Change Along Korean Coasts, Securing Commercial Channels for Local Fishermen

Seoul - In a strategic response to ecological and commercial transformations across the Korean peninsula, Dongwon Industries announced on June 10, 2026, the launch of full-scale distribution for domestic fresh bluefin tuna sashimi, a product distinguished by omitting any freezing process at any stage from catch to commercialization.

This initiative aims to integrate emerging marine resources—generated by rising ocean temperatures—into the mass consumer market. The product will be available to consumers at the country's major retail chains, including Emart, Lotte Mart, Hyundai Department Store, and the digital platform Naver Brand Store.

Climate Change Impact and Catch Volume Growth

Global warming and the subsequent rise in sea surface temperatures have driven a shift of subtropical species into the coastal waters of South Korea. Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), which traditionally inhabited milder and subtropical seas, has become a frequent and massive catch along the Korean littoral, particularly in the eastern coastal regions of Gyeongsangbuk-do, encompassing the districts of Uljin, Yeongdeok, and Pohang.

Statistical data reflects the magnitude of this environmental and fisheries phenomenon:

  • In the year 2020, the catch volume of tuna and related species in this coastal region was just 25 tons.

  • By the year 2024, the figure experienced an exponential surge, reaching 966 tons.

  • This increase represents a nearly 40-fold growth in catch volume within a four-year period.

Cold Chain Logistics and Support for the Local Fishing Sector

Despite the notable increase in resource availability, local coastal and artisanal fishermen have faced severe difficulties securing viable distribution channels. Tuna is a highly perishable species that dies immediately upon being pulled up in nets, demanding advanced infrastructure for immediate refrigeration and processing to preserve its commercial value.

To resolve this logistical bottleneck, Dongwon Industries has leveraged its infrastructure and 57 years of accumulated experience in refrigeration, processing, and cold chain logistics. The company directly purchases catches from local fishermen at sea, optimizing transit times and omitting traditional intermediate phases of fish distribution, such as port auctions.

The specimens are transported directly to the processing plant operated by the firm in Busan. By completely omitting freezing, the final product maintains an optimal standard of freshness, maximizing the organoleptic qualities, texture, and deep flavor characteristic of high-quality sashimi.

"Through our own distribution network, we are capable of swiftly commercializing new coastal resources available as a result of climate change," an official spokesperson for Dongwon Industries stated. "We will maintain our commitment to expanding the distribution infrastructure for South Korea’s marine products, fostering mutual prosperity and shared growth with local coastal fishermen."

気候変動の影響と漁獲量の増加

この物流のボトルネックを解決するため、東遠産業は自社のインフラと、冷凍・加工・コールドチェーン物流において培ってきた57年間の豊富な経験を活用しました。同社は、海上で地元の漁師から漁獲物を直接買い取ることで、輸送時間を最適化し、港での競り(オークション)といった従来の魚流通における中間段階を省略しています。

漁獲されたクロマグロは、同社が釜山(Busan)に構える加工工場へと直接搬送されます。凍結工程を完全に省くことで、最終製品は最適な鮮度基準を維持し、高品質なサシミ特有の豊かな風味、食感、そして深い味わいを最大限に引き出しています。
