SOUTH COAST — For generations, the small-scale fishers navigating South Africa's rugged South Coast cast their nets in relative isolation. Today, they share a unified, powerful voice at the decision-making table.

Three years after its official launch, the South Coast Small-Scale and Community Fishing Forum is fundamentally transforming local livelihoods. Before the Forum’s inception, many small-scale fishers operated on the margins, with limited access to institutional support and no structured channel to raise grievances or influence marine policy.

Recognizing this gap, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) brought South Coast fishers together to address localized marine issues, culminating in the Forum’s official establishment in April 2023. Today, the body represents the interests of eight local cooperatives, uniting more than 500 small-scale fishers under a shared vision.
