EU Invests Over Half a Billion Euros to Unleash Algae's Sustainable Potential

EUROPEAN UNION
Tuesday, June 17, 2025, 06:10 (GMT + 9)

A decade of European funding drives research and innovation, fostering eco-friendly solutions in food, marine restoration, and bioplastics.

BRUSSELS – The European Union has invested approximately €559 million over the past decade (2014-2023) to advance the algae sector, recognizing its "huge potential" in areas ranging from sustainable food to marine restoration and bioplastics. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) recently highlighted this pivotal role in a new factsheet summarizing results from 219 EU-funded projects.

These projects engaged 1,470 organizations across the EU, primarily from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Portugal. This significant support has been crucial in tackling technical and financial barriers, boosting research and development, and paving the way for new markets. Initiatives like "Seafood Algternative," which creates algae-based seafood substitutes, and "REEForest LIFE," which restores endangered macroalgal forests, demonstrate tangible impacts.

Looking ahead, the factsheet outlines key actions: increasing investment in advanced bio-based technologies, supporting cross-sector collaboration, addressing high R&D costs, and improving consumer awareness. As Europe scales up algae production, it does so not only with environmental ambition but with clear benefits for citizens—through job creation, healthier food systems, and cleaner seas.
