Hotel group Iberostar obtains MSC’s chain of custody
SPAIN

Iberostar Group presented on Friday its new sustainable fisheries initiative together with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), becoming the first hotel chain in southern Europe to have the chain of custody of MSC, the leading program that guarantees eco-labelling and certification best practices. Iberostar thus enters the top 5 of certified hotel chains throughout Europe.
Aware of the overfishing issue experienced by our oceans, Iberostar Group launched its new project for the promotion and consumption of sustainable fisheries in an event held in Madrid, in which, in addition to a briefing, attendees were able to taste a prepared menu based on sustainable fish, created by the chefs of the chain in collaboration with Pontevedra cook Pepe Solla.
Thanks to this agreement, Iberostar becomes the first hotel chain in Spain and in southern Europe, to have MSC chain of custody in four restaurants of four hotels in the chain.
The promotion of sustainable fishing is one of the three action lines of the "Wave of Change" movement that the company presented a few months ago with the announcement of the removal of disposable plastic products from all the rooms of the hotels in the chain in Spain in 2018 and all of its hotels in 2019.
The newly launched initiative now seeks to promote a change in approach, with a focus on the protection of seas and oceans.
To meet this challenge, Iberostar has eliminated from its gastronomic offer species that do not prove to have been obtained in a sustainable manner and has begun to offer certified sustainable fish in its menus.
For this summer 2018, the Mallorcan chain will offer certified fish in four restaurants: Gran Clavel, located at Iberostar Las Letras Gran Via (Madrid); in Ca's Menestral, Iberostar Paseo de Gracia (Barcelona); Astir restaurant, at Iberostar Grand Portals Nous (Mallorca); and Marea restaurant, at Iberostar Playa de Palma (Mallorca).
