Myanmar Shrimp Exports Increase to Over 10,000 Tons

Revenue Reaches  $33.136 Million  as Industry Targets High-Standard Markets

Myanmar’s shrimp export sector showed improved performance during the 2025-2026 fiscal year. According to statistics from the Fisheries Department , the country exported a total of 10,581.524 metric tons of shrimp between April 1, 2025 , and March 31, 2026 .

The exports generated $33.136 million in foreign exchange, representing an increase of 1,434.909 metric tons compared to the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

Trade Volume and Distribution

The Fisheries Department reported that the majority of shrimp exports moved through maritime routes:

  • Normal Trade Channels: 9,593.594 tons exported, earning over $27 million .

  • Border Trade Channels: 987.93 tons exported, earning over $5 million .

Currently, Myanmar exports aquatic products—including shrimp, fish, and crabs—to more than 40 countries . Major trade partners include China , Thailand , Bangladesh , and Japan .Products are shipped primarily through Yangon via normal trade and various border trade routes.

Quality Improvements and Market Expansion

Domestic producers are actively working to expand into broader markets. To gain direct access to the stable, high-standard European market, producers are "investing heavily in improving product quality and expanding their market reach."

Overview of the Aquatic Sector

The growth in shrimp exports contributed to a strong year for the entire fisheries sector. In the 2025-2026 fiscal year, Myanmar exported more than 460,000 metric tons of aquatic products in total, generating $689.15 million in revenue.

The World Food Network (Beijing) noted that the increased export rates and efforts to penetrate high-end international markets are "encouraging steps towards the long-term sustainable development of Myanmar's aquatic industry."
