Ecological Crisis Looms as Rotting Crops Risk Mass Fish Mortality Across Sylhet's Wetlands

SYLHET  — Heavy pre-monsoon rainfall in the upstream hills of Cherrapunji and Meghalaya has funneled massive volumes of water into the haor basins of Sylhet and surrounding districts. While the immediate visual impact is the submergence of unharvested rice, experts are sounding the alarm over a "cascadng ecological concern" that threatens to devastate the region's massive seafood industry.

The haor region, a network of 373 wetlands, is a vital aquatic hub for the nation. According to the Fisheries Resources Survey System , these fisheries produced 128,378 tons of fish in the 2023–24 financial year. At current market valuations, this represents a sector worth tens of millions of dollars (estimated over US$150 million ) that provides food security and livelihoods for millions of people.

The Oxygen Crisis Beneath the Waves

The threat to the seafood sector is tied directly to the submerged vegetation. As of April 28 , only about 50% of the harvest was complete, leaving nearly half of the ripened paddy to rot underwater.

As these organic materials decompose, microbial activity spikes, rapidly consuming dissolved oxygen. This process releases ammonia and alters pH levels, creating a toxic "dead zone" for aquatic life.

"Fish, which depend on sufficient dissolved oxygen levels, are particularly vulnerable," notes Iftekhar Ahmed Fagun . "Prolonged stagnation combined with high organic load can lead to oxygen depletion, forcing fish to migrate where possible, or suffer stress and mortality."

Echoes of the 2017 Disaster

The current hydrological data draws chilling parallels to the early flash floods of 2017. During that period, the decomposition of unharvested crops led to abnormal ammonia buildup and a collapse in oxygen levels, resulting in mass fish mortality across several haor systems.

The regional breakdown of the current harvest progress highlights the scale of the potential biological load:

  • Sunamganj : 44.5% harvested.

  • Kishoreganj : 48% harvested.

  • Habiganj : 53% harvested.

  • Netrakona : 55% to 62% harvested.

A Call for Integrated Monitoring

With modern machinery unable to operate in the muddy, flooded terrain and labor costs rising, the focus has shifted to damage control. Experts argue that the government must move beyond just tracking crop loss and begin real-time monitoring of water quality to save the fisheries.

"Managing haor conditions requires an integrated approach that considers both crop production and aquatic health," the report suggests. "The Department of Fisheries and relevant officials should remain alert... preparedness now may determine whether the haor ecosystem faces another avoidable crisis."

For the fishing communities of Sylhet , the stakes couldn't be higher. A combined shock of agricultural failure and declining fish stocks would undermine the economic resilience of the entire region, turning a seasonal flood into a long-term humanitarian and ecological catastrophe.
