Bering Sea B Season Approaches as A Season Processing Trends Upward

Recent resource tracking estimates for the Bering Sea Domestic Annual Processing (DAP) Alaska pollock fishery reveal a strong year-over-year production growth curve. Final seasonal compilations compiled by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) indicate that the total Grand Total catch reached 1,265,894 metric tons in 2025, marking a steady expansion over the 1,262,214 metric tons recorded during the previous annual cycle. Despite administrative data lags caused by an extended 43-day US government shutdown, organizational compliance remained robust across all major fishing associations.

Operational distributions show that Catcher Processors (C/P) led the offshore volume, yielding 277,144 metric tons during the A Season—a 6.1% surge compared to the 261,290 metric tons harvested in the prior A Season. Fleet standouts included the Arctic Fjord, which brought in a substantial annual total of 82,041 metric tons, followed closely by the Alaska Ocean at 74,888 metric tons and the Northern Eagle at 63,724 metric tons. In the mothership sector, operations utilizing the Golden Alaska and Excellence generated a combined A Season volume of 52,997 metric tons, representing a 7.4% increase over previous baselines.

Shore-Based Operations

In the coastal sector, Shore-based Operations kept pace with offshore growth, logging 258,109 metric tons during the A Season (a 5.9% increase year-over-year). The Northern Victor Fleet Cooperative dominated regional shore processing with a massive annual intake of 166,979 metric tons, while the Akutan Catcher Vessel Association processed 141,961 metric tons, and the Westward Fleet Cooperative brought in 109,616 metric tons. The industry is now rapidly preparing for the local noon opening of the Bering Sea B Season on June 10, with operators targeting early quota fulfillment to avoid late-season low-pressure systems and rough maritime conditions.

Japanese Domestic Wholesale Trends

Concurrently, commercial distribution networks for downstream products at the Sendai Central Wholesale Market highlight stable consumer channels in the Japanese domestic sector. Fresh Alaska pollock (Suketo-tara) landings reached 6 metric tons in April 2026, commanding a high average unit market price of $14.84 per kilogram (2,300 JPY, calculated at an exchange rate of 155 JPY to 1 US$) which represents a significant 21.1% increase year-over-year.

Sendai Central Wholesale Market

Additionally, value-added secondary products maintained strong market positions, with Salted Pollock Roe (Tarako) logging 4 metric tons for the month at an average price of $18.14 per kilogram (2,812 JPY), pushing year-to-date cumulative roe volumes to 21 metric tons.
