Ecuador Continues to Rely on Its Main Export Markets—the United States, China, and Europe—to Maintain Its Precarious Market Balance

Global Shrimp Tug-of-War: Asian Prices Plummet as Ecuador Holds the Line

WORLDWIDE
Monday, May 11, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

Inventory Glut and Stiff Competition Force Asian Suppliers to Slash Rates Amidst Market Saturation

The global shrimp market is witnessing a widening divide as prices for Asian farmed white shrimp continue a downward spiral, while Ecuadorian suppliers manage to find a temporary floor. According to a report by Food World (Beijing), the United States wholesale market is currently grappling with high inventory levels, leaving Asian exporters—particularly those in India, Vietnam, and Indonesia—struggling to move product.

Market Dynamics and Regional Shifts

Recent data indicates that prices for several sizes of Asian shrimp have fallen below April levels, reaching some of the lowest points seen in recent years. In contrast, the Ecuadorian white shrimp market has remained relatively stable, with significantly less price volatility.

Key factors driving this divergence include:

  • High Inventory: US importers and distributors are currently sitting on massive stockpiles.

  • Sluggish Demand: Purchasing from the catering and retail sectors has failed to gain significant momentum.

  • Logistical Advantages: Ecuador's proximity to the US allows for shorter transportation times and more controlled replenishment.

The Asian Struggle

Products from India and Indonesia have been hit hardest by the price corrections. To clear out smaller-sized products, processors and traders are being forced to engage in aggressive price-cutting. "The US market is currently highly competitive, forcing processors and traders to continue lowering prices to boost sales," noted some importers. This pressure is compounded by the arrival of previously signed low-priced orders at US ports, further depressing spot market prices.

Ecuador’s Cautious Stability

While Asia faces a supply glut, Ecuadorian processing plants are exercising strict pricing discipline. Market analysts suggest that these suppliers are currently more focused on maintaining price stability than on rapidly expanding sales volume. "Ecuadorian products are more stable and their supply is easier to control," US importers believe. Some suppliers have even proactively reduced low-price sales to prevent a market freefall.

Global Outlook

Despite the pricing pressure, global supply remains ample. Major producing countries are maintaining high farming volumes, but a weaker-than-expected recovery in consumption across Europe and the United States continues to weigh on export values.

Looking ahead, US importers expect the short-term focus to remain squarely on inventory digestion. New procurement plans are expected to remain conservative until the current surplus is cleared. For now, Ecuador continues to lean on its primary destinations—the United States, China, and Europe—to maintain its precarious market equilibrium.
