Supply Bottlenecks Drive Fresh Tuna Costs to New Heights While Frozen Bigeye Hits Historical Records

TOKYO – The Japanese tuna market experienced a seismic shift following the Golden Week holiday, as a combination of reduced fishing activity and limited arrivals sent prices for fresh bluefin tuna soaring. Data from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market reveals a stark divergence in the industry, characterized by an 88% price jump for domestic fresh catches and record-breaking valuations for low-priced frozen bigeye tuna.

Fresh Bluefin: The Supply Crunch

In Week 19 (May 4-10), the average auction price for domestically produced, natural, fresh bluefin tuna (over 40 kg) surged to $38.35 per kg (including a 10% consumption tax), a massive leap from the prior week.

This spike was fueled by a significant drop in volume rather than a demand surge. Market arrivals fell from 40-50 fish daily in Week 18 to approximately 30 fish in Week 19. The shortage was exacerbated by the Golden Week schedule, which saw the market closed on Monday and Tuesday, followed by a public holiday on Wednesday.

“Deliveries across Japan were below average that week,” wholesalers reported, noting that the absence of purse seine catches from Miyagi Prefecture—usually a market staple—further tightened the grip on supply.

High-End Transactions and Regional Shifts

The premium segment saw the most dramatic movement:

  • Top-tier prices: Rose from approximately $65.00/kg to $84.50/kg.

  • Low-end prices: Climbed from $14.05/kg to $19.50/kg.

  • Peak Transaction: Three longline bluefin from Kanagawa Prefecture weighing over 100 kg fetched up to $97.50/kg.

Other notable regional contributions included the return of the prestigious Aomori Oma tuna, which traded at approximately $87.75/kg, and fixed-net catches from Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, where high-quality specimens reached $78.00/kg.

Frozen Market: Bigeye Hits Record Highs

While fresh prices surged, the frozen bigeye tuna market saw its own milestone. The price for low-end frozen bigeye transactions rose to $9.13/kg, a new historical high. This follows a steady climb from $7.72/kg in Week 17.

Market Price Breakdown by Region (Frozen Bigeye):

International Imports and Stable Segments

Despite the domestic volatility, some sectors remained resilient:

  • Southern Hemisphere: 32 bluefin from Australia arrived on Friday, selling for roughly $22.75/kg, while New Zealand catches fetched between $18.20 and $35.75/kg.

  • Southern Bluefin: Markets remained stable with 147 daily arrivals from Cape Town, South Africa and Southwest Australia, with mid-range prices holding at $14.24/kg.

  • The Mediterranean: Spanish frozen bluefin remained steady, with high-end products at $27.95/kg.

Conversely, the frozen bluefin market showed signs of softening, with the average assessed price at Toyosu falling 4% week-on-week, and high-end Irish longline catches dropping to $35.10/kg.
