Historic supply crunch sends export volumes plunging to 2009 levels while luxury "Skrei" reaches record-breaking valuations.

OSLO – The Norwegian seafood industry is facing a transformative season defined by tightening supply and aggressive pricing. New data reveals that Norway exported 3,129 tonnes of fresh cod in April 2026, valued at approximately $28.4 million. This represents a 23% drop in volume and a 4% dip in value compared to the same period last year.

According to Eivind Hestvik Brækkan, a seafood analyst at the Norwegian Seafood Council, the trend is undeniable. “Lower quotas and landings have characterised the entire cod season, and this is clearly reflected in the export figures for April as well,” Brækkan noted.

Fresh and Farmed Cod: A Tale of Two Stocks

The decline has spared neither the wild nor the farmed sectors.

  • Fresh Wild Cod: Exports plummeted 24% to 2,048 tonnes, with a total value of $20.5 million.

  • Fresh Farmed Cod: Volume dropped 22% to 1,080 tonnes, valued at $7.9 million.

Despite the current dip in farmed exports, Brækkan remains optimistic about the latter half of the year: “Although the export volume of farmed cod has now fallen for three months in a row, figures from the Directorate of Fisheries show that the biomass has increased significantly, and we therefore expect that the export volume will eventually also increase as the year progresses.”

Skrei: The Luxury Catch Hits Record Price Tags

The prestigious, quality-labelled Skrei—available only between January and April—saw its lowest export volume in history. In 2026, Norway exported 1,862 tonnes of Skrei worth $19.2 million. While volume fell 29%, the average price soared to a record $10.33 (111 kroner) per kg—a 19% increase from last year.

“Low quotas mean that cod has become increasingly expensive, and for many it has become a fish for special occasions,” Brækkan explained, suggesting that the high price point has dampened demand among casual consumers. Tore Holvik, the Seafood Council’s representative in Spain, echoed this sentiment: “The rise in skrei prices has significantly dampened consumption in our largest skrei market, Spain. However... we can expect consumption to grow if there is an increase in quotas.”

Global Market Shifts: From the UK to Mexico

The supply squeeze has rippled across various processing sectors:

  • Frozen Cod: Export volumes crashed 45% in April to 1,919 tonnes ($17.9 million). While the UK remains the largest market, a shift is occurring; while whole frozen cod fell, frozen fillet exports to the UK actually rose 41% in volume to 86 tonnes, worth $1.5 million.

  • Clipfish: Total exports fell 41% to 3,080 tonnes ($30.2 million). However, Mexico emerged as a bright spot, with volumes doubling to 225 tonnes, a staggering 180% increase in value to $2.4 million.

  • Salted Fish: Portugal continues to drive demand despite record prices. The average export price for salted cod hit an all-time high of $15.36 (165 kroner) per kg in April.

  • Dried Fish: In a rare reversal of the trend, dried fish saw a 71% increase in value to $5.9 million, largely due to a recovery from the exceptionally low volumes recorded in April of the previous year. Italy remains the dominant buyer, accounting for a 113% increase in value growth this month.

Skrei:

享有盛誉、带有质量标签的Skrei(仅在1月4月期间供应)创下了史上最低出口量。
