According to the production statistics of the fishery and aquaculture industry released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on the 28th, the production volume of the fishery and aquaculture industry in the first year of Reiwa was 4,162,800 tons, a decrease of 5.8% from the previous year, which is statistically comparable. The minimum since 1958 was updated for the first time in 2 years. The decline in mackerel and saury, which have a relatively large catch, was affected.

Compared to the peak year of 1984 (128,16 thousand tons), it decreased by 70%. In recent years, the rise in seawater temperature due to climate change has been a headwind, and the production of fisheries and aquaculture continues to decline. In 2018, the year before began to increase for the first time in 6 years, but the reduction rate in the first year of Reiwa was the largest since 2016 (down 5.9%).

The catch of the “sea surface fishing industry” operating on the surface of the sea decreased by 4.8% to 3,197,000 tons, the first decrease in two years. Among the main types of fish, mackerels decreased by 17.9%, and skipjack also decreased by 5.9%. On the other hand, sardines increased by 2.5%, scallop increased by 11.4%, and pollock increased by 20.6%. The number of saury, salmon, and squid has been the lowest since 1958.

Harvesting in the aquaculture industry fell 9.2% to 912,400 tons. While fish decreased by 0.9%, shellfish such as oysters and scallops decreased by 13.0%, and seaweeds such as seaweed and seaweed decreased by 11.5%.

Note: Reiwa (Japanese: 令和) is the current era of Japan's official calendar. It began on 1 May 2019, the day on which Emperor Akihito's elder son, Naruhito, ascended the throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan. The day before, then-Emperor Akihito abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne, marking the end of the Heisei era.
