Sernapesca initiated unprecedented certification of the pacific pomfret for artisanal fishermen

At 00:00 yesterday, the Special Inspection Plan for the Pacific pomfret or Reineta (Brama australis) began to apply to the regions of Maule and Biobío. This unprecedented measure seeks to value this important resource of artisanal fishery, which in recent months has been affected by an intensive illegal extraction, according to the data analyzed by the fisheries authority.

This was explained by Sernapesca National Director Alicia Gallardo, who highlighted the unprecedented nature of this measure, which establishes that from now on all artisanal vessels that operate on reineta in these regions must give notice of their landfall, and follow the procedure established in resolutions No. 1804 and No. 2055 of the fisheries authority, which are available on its website.

In this way, Sernapesca has established a process equivalent to the compulsory certification of vessels of 12 meters or more in length for smaller boats. With this, it seeks to achieve an appropriate control of the landings of this important resource, greatly consumed in the domestic market, and whose catches have largely increased in the last months: while in 2018 18,000 tons were landed in the Biobío region, so far this year more than 12,000 tons have already been registered only in the port of Lebu.

"The reineta is only subject to the access regime, as the only administration measure, since it has not established quotas, fishing bans or minimum size; therefore, its explosive fishing during these last months, added to the increase in the number of findings and denunciations of illegal fishing or marketing of this resource, is a situation that concerns us, and by virtue of this we have established this special control plan," said the National Director.

The plan also determines the artisanal fishing port of Lebu as an authorized landing point, where inspectors of the Service will carry out on-site verifications of the catches. In the rest of the region, as well as in the Maule region, Sernapesca will be able to establish face-to-face or remote verification procedures for other landing points depending on the risk analysis carried out by the entity.

It should be noted that Lebu is the main landing port for this resource in the area, with more than 690 vessels operating on the reineta. The Biobío region concentrates more than 70 per cent of the landings of reineta at the national level.

"With this ordering and control process, we want to minimize illegal fishing activities, and for this we have reinforced the provision in the field, which will allow us to also increase the controls to means of transport and traders, as well as the control that is carried out in fishing areas with the maritime authority," said Gallardo.
