Produce set 450,000 tonnes of quota for giant squid (Dosidicus gigas)

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has established a quota of 450,000 tons applicable to the giant squid (Dosidicus gigas) resource for 2019, which may be modified when the Marine Institute of Peru (IMARPE) recommends it for biological, fishing or environmental reasons.

According to Ministerial Resolution No. 213-2019 PRODUCE, the Ministry of Production will terminate the extractive activities when the quota set for the entire Peruvian coastline is reached or estimated to be used up.

PRODUCE established the squid quota this year after IMARPE submitted a technical report in which it points out, among other things, that there is a dominance and persistence of the giant squid of medium size of maturity; and recommends that fishing levels for this year do not exceed 450,000 tons.

Giant squid (pota) is the second most important fishery in the country after anchovy. According to the I National Census of Artisanal Fisheries of the Maritime Area 2012 (CENPAR 2012) of this activity, more than 14,000 artisanal fishermen distributed throughout Peru depend on this fishery.

The ministerial resolution states that the IMARPE should inform PRODUCE about the follow-up on the monitoring of the indicators of exploitation status and catch projections of the giant squid, recommending the necessary fisheries management measures.

Likewise, it indicates that the General Directorate of Supervision, Supervision and Sanction of the Vice Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, must adopt the necessary measures to protect compliance with the provisions of fishery regulations on the resource.
