Breakthrough Study Reveals How a Key Seafood Species Fights Ocean Acidification and Captures Carbon

Chinese and Norwegian scientists uncover mechanisms that could reshape sustainable aquaculture and climate strategies

A major scientific breakthrough has been announced by researchers at the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, who—together with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research—have unveiled how the economically vital Manila clam adapts to ocean acidification while contributing to carbon sequestration.

The international research team, led by Professor Jiang Zengjie, has published its findings in the journals iScience and Aquaculture, alongside securing one national invention patent. The study provides new insights into both the biological resilience of shellfish and their potential role in mitigating climate change.

At the heart of the discovery is a previously unclear mechanism that allows Manila clams to regulate their internal pH levels under increasingly acidic ocean conditions. The researchers found that the clams maintain stability through a process involving cytoplasmic carbonic anhydrase-mediated H₂ efflux, supported by a coordinated network of enzymes and ion regulators, including soluble adenylate cyclase and Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase.

However, this adaptation comes at a cost. The study shows that maintaining internal balance requires significant energy, forcing the clams to prioritize shell formation over soft tissue growth. This trade-off highlights the biological strain marine organisms face as ocean chemistry shifts.

To reach these conclusions, the team developed a closed-loop experimental system capable of tracking carbon flow in real time within shellfish metabolism. This advanced setup enabled researchers to simulate acidification conditions and monitor how clams respond at both cellular and organism levels.

Using dynamic energy budget theory, the scientists also built a growth model that allowed them to measure carbon storage throughout the clam’s life cycle with unprecedented precision—down to daily and hourly changes, rather than traditional monthly or seasonal estimates.

The results demonstrate that Manila clams can act as measurable carbon sinks in aquaculture systems, strengthening the case for integrating shellfish farming into climate mitigation strategies. The research connects processes across three levels: cellular regulation, individual energy allocation, and ecosystem carbon cycling.

According to the team, these findings could support the development of acidification-resistant shellfish breeds and improve environmental management in aquaculture. They also lay the groundwork for expanding carbon sink fisheries, a growing concept in sustainable marine resource management.

The study’s first author is Associate Researcher Jiang Weiwei, with Professor Jiang Zengjie serving as corresponding author. Funding was provided by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Innovation Team of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, the National Shellfish Industry Technology System, and the Sino-Norwegian international cooperation project EAG.

As ocean acidification continues to intensify globally, this research positions the humble Manila clam as both a survivor of environmental change and a potential ally in the fight against climate change.
