Imports of Russian seafood into South Korea climbed significantly in March, with frozen fish shipments reaching their highest level in nearly three years, according to an analysis of Statistics Korea data reported by Sputnik News.

South Korea imported $39.5 million worth of frozen fish from Russia in March—an increase of 60% month-on-month—marking the strongest performance since May 2023. Despite the sharp monthly rise, the figure remained broadly unchanged compared to the same period last year, indicating stable long-term demand.

The surge was not limited to frozen fish. Imports of Russian crabs rose to $33.9 million, up 23% from February, reinforcing Russia’s dominance as South Korea’s leading crab supplier. Meanwhile, purchases of fish fillets and fish meat totaled $6.7 million, reflecting a 9.4% decline, and imports of other fish products dropped 14% to $4.2 million.

In total, South Korea imported $84.7 million worth of fish and seafood from Russia in March—an increase of 31% month-on-month and 2% year-on-year.

Overall seafood imports into South Korea reached $443.1 million during the same period. Russia ranked as the second-largest supplier, trailing only China, which exported $87.7 million worth of seafood to the country. Other key suppliers included Norway ($60.3 million), Vietnam ($33 million), and Japan ($20.5 million).

While Russia held the second position in frozen fish exports, it maintained a clear lead in the crab segment, highlighting its strategic importance in South Korea’s seafood supply chain.
