Global Shrimp Market Shifts: India Surges as Ecuador Holds Firm Amid Supply Pressures

WORLDWIDE
Friday, April 17, 2026, 06:00 (GMT + 9)

The global shrimp market showed mixed movements during Week 16 of 2026 (April 13–19), with stabilization in Ecuador, price increases in India, and continued declines across Southeast Asia, reflecting shifting supply dynamics and cautious international demand, according to Food World (Beijing).

According to the UCN Global Shrimp Index, which tracks prices across China, Ecuador, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand based on 60 shrimp per kilogram, the average price stood at $3.31/kg, marking a 7% decrease year-over-year.

In Ecuador, farmgate prices appear to have found a floor after weeks of decline. The widely traded 20/30 count shrimp held steady at $4.20/kg, while some other sizes posted slight gains. Industry observers note that rising global fuel costs have significantly increased production expenses in the country. At the same time, adverse weather conditions have delayed harvests in certain regions, helping to ease oversupply pressures.

Export prices from Ecuador to China have also stabilized. While 20/30 size shrimp remain under pressure, 30/40 and smaller sizes, including water-frozen and salt-frozen products, have held steady. Exporters report that Chinese buyers are purchasing cautiously, replenishing inventories as needed rather than aggressively capitalizing on low prices.

Meanwhile, India saw a notable upward trend in shrimp prices. In Andhra Pradesh, pond prices rose 2% to 4% across all sizes, with 50-count shrimp experiencing the largest increase per kilogram. The country’s spring crop cycle, which began in late January, is expected to reach peak harvest by mid-May.

Bharat Kakani, general manager of Fedora Sea Foods, told UCN: "We are finally seeing prices rise again. We had expected prices to fall with the harvest season, but that is not the case. Hopefully, we will see the price trend for the new season in another week or two."

In Indonesia, shrimp prices pulled back slightly from recent highs. The 60-count size dropped 1.4% week-on-week, while larger sizes recorded smaller declines. Despite this, prices remain 13% to 29% higher than a year ago, particularly for smaller sizes such as 90–100 count shrimp. Limited supply continues to support elevated prices, with some farmers opting to harvest early—between 80 and 100 days after stocking—to secure profits, increasing the availability of smaller shrimp.

Across Vietnam, prices remained subdued as production ramps up. The Mekong Delta entered its peak seeding season between March and April, with seedling volumes rising compared to last year. With no major disease outbreaks and improved farming conditions, total output in 2026 is expected to exceed the previous year.

In Thailand, shrimp prices continued their downward trajectory, particularly for smaller sizes. Shrimp in the 60–80 count range recorded declines of 8% to 17% year-over-year, reflecting ongoing supply pressures and softer demand.

Overall, the global shrimp market remains in a state of adjustment, with regional supply variations, harvest timing, and buyer behavior shaping short-term price trends.
