Innovation, shifting export dynamics, and evolving consumer trends reshape the global shrimp market landscape

Vietnam's shrimp industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by rapid adoption of advanced farming technologies and evolving export strategies, even as India emerges as a formidable competitor in the black tiger shrimp segment.

Over the past 5–10 years , Vietnam has shifted decisively from traditional aquaculture methods to intensive and super-intensive farming systems. These modern approaches incorporate lined ponds, environmental sensors, automated feeding, and data-driven management. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) , this technological shift is significantly boosting productivity and global competitiveness.

Several innovative farming models are leading this change. The TLSS (Thang Long Smart System) recorded a success rate of approximately 84% between December 2024 and October 2025. Meanwhile, CP Vietnam's CPF-Combine model has reduced farming cycles to just 2–3 months , producing shrimp sizes of around 15 shrimp per kilogram .

Other breakthroughs include Minh Phu's MPBio technology , which achieves survival rates near 80% , cuts costs by up to 50% , and increases profits by 10–20% . Similarly, Grobest's GROFARM PRO has surpassed a 92% success rate through comprehensive environmental control and mobile laboratory systems.

Additional innovations such as TOMGOXY™ (pure oxygen supply), CTU-RAS (recirculating water systems with only 10–20% water replacement), and Uni-President's “3 Goods” model are contributing to cost efficiency, environmental sustainability, and improved yields.

These developments are positioning Vietnam as a leader in high-value shrimp production, supported by strong collaboration between businesses and research institutions.

At the same time, Japan continues to play a crucial role as a stable and high-value export market. As of March 15, 2026 , Vietnam's shrimp exports to Japan reached US$89 million , marking a 2% increase year-on-year and accounting for 10.4% of total shrimp exports. Japan remains Vietnam's third-largest market , following China and the European Union .

Export structures to Japan remain consistent, with whiteleg shrimp dominating. In 2025 , exports of this variety reached US$386.7 million , representing 65–70% of total export value. Black tiger shrimp followed with US$93.2 million , maintaining its position in the premium segment.

Consumer segmentation in Japan continues to shape demand. Whiteleg shrimp caters to mass-market consumption and food service industries, while tiger shrimp retains its appeal in higher-end markets, despite a gradual decline in scale due to rising living costs.

Meanwhile, global competition is intensifying. India has rapidly expanded its black tiger shrimp exports, transforming the segment from a niche product into a major growth driver. According to DGCIS/Expana , India's exports surged from 6,059 tons in 2020 to 58,221 tons in 2025 —a nearly tenfold increase . Growth peaked between 2021 and 2023 , with annual increases exceeding 100% , 80% , and 59% , respectively, before rebounding by 36% in 2025 after a brief slowdown.

In contrast, Vietnam maintains a stable production base, with black tiger shrimp farming areas holding steady at approximately 620,000–625,000 hectares . Output rose from 265,000 tons in 2021 to 310,000 tons in 2025. However, export value declined from US$619.6 million in 2021 to around US$452.9 million in 2025 , reflecting shifting market dynamics.

Key export destinations—including Japan , China–Hong Kong , the United States , and Canada —have remained relatively stable for Vietnam's tiger shrimp.

Vietnam is positioning itself today as a leading country in the development and production of more sophisticated, higher value-added products

Despite these competitive pressures, global shrimp consumption continues to grow steadily. Major markets such as China , the United States , and the European Union remain central to demand, with Europe showing consistent consumption, particularly in high-quality and processed products.

As highlighted by VASEP , Vietnam's strategy is increasingly focused on leveraging technology, improving product quality, and targeting high-value segments. While India accelerates volume growth in black tiger shrimp exports, Vietnam is carving out a distinct path centered on efficiency, sustainability, and premium market positioning in an increasingly competitive global seafood industry.

Vietnam's high-tech shrimp farming revolution coincides with a surge in Indian tiger shrimp exports.

Technological Innovation, Changes in Export Structure, and Evolving Consumption Trends Reshape the Global Shrimp Market Landscape

Vietnam's shrimp industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the rapid adoption of advanced aquaculture technologies and adjustments to its export strategy. Meanwhile, India is rapidly emerging as a significant competitor in the black tiger shrimp market.

Over the past 5–10 years , Vietnam has shifted from traditional aquaculture methods to intensive and hyperintensive systems. These modern methods include pond mulching, environmental sensors, automated feeding, and data-driven management. According to the Vietnam Association of Fisheries Exporters and Producers (VASEP), this technological transformation has significantly improved production efficiency and international competitiveness.

Several innovative farming models are leading this transformation. TLSS (Thang Long Smart System) achieved a success rate of approximately 84% between December 2024 and October 2025. Meanwhile, CP Vietnam's CPF-Combine model shortens the farming cycle to just 2–3 months and achieves a larger product size of approximately 15 birds per kilogram .

Furthermore, Mingfu's MPBio technology achieves a survival rate of approximately 80% , reduces costs by up to 50% , and increases profits by 10–20% . Meanwhile, Grobest's GROFARM PRO , through its integrated control system and mobile laboratory, achieves a success rate exceeding **92%**.

Other innovative models such as TOMGOXY™ (which provides pure oxygen), CTU-RAS (a water recycling system that only replenishes 10–20% fresh water), and Uni-President’s “three-good” model are also playing a role in reducing costs, reducing pollution, and improving sustainability.

These advancements have enabled Vietnam to gradually become a leading country in high-value-added shrimp production, with cooperation between enterprises and research institutions being a key driving force.

Meanwhile, Japan remains a stable and high-value important market. As of March 15, 2026 , Vietnam's shrimp exports to Japan reached US$89 million , a year-on-year increase of 2% , accounting for 10.4% of total exports . Japan is currently Vietnam 's third largest market after China and the European Union .

The export structure to Japan remains stable, with white shrimp still dominating. Exports of this product are projected to reach US$386.7 million in 2025 , accounting for 65-70% of total exports . Black tiger shrimp ranks second with US$93.2 million , maintaining an important position in the high-end market.

In the Japanese market, there is a clear distinction between different types of shrimp and their target consumer groups. White shrimp are suitable for the mass market and the food service industry, while black tiger shrimp, although its production scale has shrunk due to rising living costs, still holds a place in the high-end market.

Meanwhile, global competition is intensifying. India has significantly expanded its black tiger shrimp exports, transforming it from a niche product into a major growth engine. According to DGCIS/Expana data, India's black tiger shrimp exports will increase nearly tenfold from 6,059 tons in 2020 to 58,221 tons in 2025. The growth was particularly significant between 2021 and 2023 , exceeding 100% , nearly 80% , and approximately 59% respectively . After slowing in 2024 , it rebounded with a growth of approximately 36% in 2025 .

In contrast, Vietnam maintains a stable production base, with black tiger prawn farming area remaining at approximately 620,000 to 625,000 hectares . Production is projected to increase from approximately 265,000 tons in 2021 to 310,000 tons in 2025 , but export value is expected to decrease from US$619.6 million in 2021 to approximately US$452.9 million in 2025 .

Major markets, including Japan , China-Hong Kong , the United States , and Canada , remained relatively stable overall.

Despite increased competition, global shrimp consumption is expected to continue growing in the medium to long term. China , the United States , and the European Union remain the main consumer markets, with Europe maintaining stable demand for high-quality and processed products.

As VASEP points out, Vietnam is advancing its development strategy through technological innovation, quality improvement, and a focus on high-value-added markets. While India expands its black tiger shrimp exports, Vietnam is forging a unique development path centered on efficiency, sustainability, and a high-end market positioning, steadily progressing amidst increasingly fierce global competition in the seafood industry.
