The campaign begins with a record quota, advanced logistical improvements, and a reinforced team, although uncertainty looms due to the ongoing fisheries inspector strike.

On Monday, April 21, 2025, the Barbate almadraba officially launched its wild bluefin tuna fishing season with a successful first "levantá" (traditional tuna haul), managed by Grupo Ricardo Fuentes through its subsidiary Pesquerías de Almadraba. During this inaugural day, 70 bluefin tuna were captured, boasting an impressive average weight of 270 kilograms each. Part of this initial catch has already been distributed under the group’s own brand, Atún Rojo Fuentes.

This year’s campaign kicks off with a record quota of 1,275 tons, the result of strategic agreements with other fleets, and a workforce expanded to 77 professionals, including both onshore and offshore personnel. Among the key logistical upgrades are the construction of a state-of-the-art cold storage facility and the addition of a vessel specifically designed for aquaculture operations.

The tuna caught in Barbate will be distributed locally within the province of Cádiz and to major national distribution hubs such as MercaMadrid, Málaga, and Barcelona. Additionally, a portion of the production will be exported to prestigious international markets including the United States and the United Kingdom. It's worth noting that Grupo Ricardo Fuentes has operated the Barbate almadraba since 2006.

However, the start of the season is clouded by the ongoing strike by fisheries inspectors, which has been in effect since Monday, March 3. This situation creates significant uncertainty around the smooth operation of the campaign and the day-to-day functionality of the almadraba.

David MartínezDirector of Pesquerías de Almadraba and Grupo Ricardo Fuentes, expressed his concern:

Martínez issued an urgent appeal to the authorities:

Throughout the campaign, the Barbate almadraba will carry out multiple "levantás" for different purposes: fresh consumption for both national and international markets, deep-freezing at -60°C for export and domestic use, and a portion destined for aquaculture. In this sector, bluefin tuna is highly prized in Japanese cuisine for its texture, marbling, and exceptional flavor.
