Okhotsk Sea: Pollock catch increased by 6.6% and herring 9.1% more than last year

According to the industry monitoring system, by April 7, 2020, in the Far Eastern basin, pollock catch amounted to 960 thousand tons, which is 6.6% higher than the level of 2019.
880 thousand tons were fishing in the Sea of Okhotsk - 5.8% higher than in 2019. Including in the Kamchatka-Kuril and West Kamchatka subzones, the total catch amounted to 576.6 thousand tons - 9.7% higher than last year. According to the Fishing Rules, the specialized fishing for pollock in these subzones was terminated on April 1, 2020. 294.5 thousand tons were fishing in the North Okhotsk Sea Subzone, 8.7% more than in 2019.
In the remaining areas of pollock, less than 25 thousand tons of each were fishing
Since the beginning of the year, Pacific herring in the Far East basin has caught 60.9 thousand tons, which is 9.1% more than last year. Including in the North Okhotsk Sea Subzone - 60.3 thousand tons, which is 17.3% more than in 2019.
Cod in the Far East basin produced 53.8 thousand tons - 18.2% more than in 2019. In the East Kamchatka zone - 20.2 thousand tons, 16.1% more than last year, in the North Kuril zone - 9.4 thousand tons, almost 2.5 times more.
There are 77 fishing vessels operating in the Pollock fishery, 18 vessels are engaged in herring production, and two vessels cod.
Over the coming week, according to the forecast of TINRO, rather active cyclonic activity is expected over and around the Sea of Okhotsk. So, on April 8, in the southern regions of the Sea of Okhotsk and in the Kuril Islands, on the West Kamchatka shelf, wind is expected to increase to 15-17 m / s. At the same time, calm weather will prevail in the northern and central regions of the Sea of Okhotsk, the wind speed will not exceed 5-10 m / s.

Currently, the pollack and herring fishery in the Sea of Okhotsk is monitored by 14 scientific observers of TINRO and five observers of KamchatNIRO on the vessels of the NGO Association of Pollock Producers.
According to forecasts, in the North Okhotsk subarea, fishing will continue until April 9, inclusive. In the future, the fleet will move to the East Sakhalin subzone, where it will continue to harvest pollock. Herring catch areas in the North Okhotsk Sea Subzone will not change significantly over the coming week, their area will noticeably increase with release from ice, and daily catches for all types of vessels will increase. The most promising for herring fishing will be the area opposite the Konya-Pyagin peninsula on the border with the West Kamchatka subzone, where herring will form pre-spawning clusters.
