Mikals Laks conquers gold at the Norwegian National Championship and prepares its leap to the international market

The company from Hjelmeland triumphs in the open category, while Garnvik AS (Frøya) and Sotra Fiskeindustri stand out in an edition marked by intense competition and exceptional quality

The Norwegian producer Mikals Laks claimed the gold medal in the open category of the Norwegian National Seafood Championship thanks to its outstanding lightly smoked salmon loin. The competition, one of the most prestigious in the sector, brings together the country’s leading producers every two years.

The company, located in the municipality of Hjelmeland, not only secured top recognition in the open class, but also won gold in the cold-smoked salmon category, further consolidating its position as a benchmark in Norway’s salmon industry.

The CEO of Mikals Laks, Maren Fossaa Viga, celebrated the recognition and announced the international expansion of the award-winning product.

“This is fantastic. Until now we have marketed the salmon loin as a gift product, but we are developing a new special box to launch it on the global market. In addition, being able to add a gold medal is a major boost,” said Fossaa Viga.

The jury highlighted in its evaluation that the winning products were “very aesthetic, with uniform and pleasant smoking,” and also praised their “balanced aroma with hints of juniper” and “very good salt level and pleasant smoky flavor.”

Garnvik AS adds two medals for Frøya

The company Garnvik AS, based in Frøya, won the silver medal for its smoked salmon with juniper berries and fennel and the bronze medal for its dry-matured smoked salmon, thus achieving two podium positions in the open category.

The CEO Emil Elshaug expressed his satisfaction with the double recognition:

“We hoped to reach the top among classic products, but winning two medals in the open category fills us with pride and humility. It is especially gratifying that dry-cured salmon — the most traditional part of our products — is receiving this recognition.”

Elshaug also emphasized that the company has successfully combined tradition and innovation, offering distinctive flavors for new consumers.

Sotra Fiskeindustri prevails in pickled salmon

During the second day of the championship, Sotra Fiskeindustri won the gold medal in the pickled salmon category, surpassing Mikals Laks (silver) and Garnvik AS (bronze).

The Director of the Processing Department, Kjetil Søyland, received the news during a team meeting, triggering an ovation among employees.

“I would like to sincerely thank the judges for this gold; it means a lot to us. It is exciting that our pickled salmon has been recognized. I also want to highlight all our employees who made this achievement possible,” stated Søyland.

In this category, eight products competed in what judges described as a “tight” contest of “very high quality.” Regarding the gold-winning product, they noted: “Uniform spices and good balance,” “excellent aesthetics,” and “uniform dill layer with attractive slices.”

Despite its industrial scale, Sotra Fiskeindustri maintains traditional methods in producing its pickled salmon, which is distributed in western Norway through the COOP system, among other channels.

The Norwegian Seafood Championship, organized by the Norwegian Seafood Companies in collaboration with the NTNU Institute of Biotechnology and Food Science, allows participation from all authorized producers in the country. The competition, held every two years, continues this week with new categories in contention and recognition of excellence in Norway’s seafood sector.

フロイヤに本拠を置くガルンヴィクASは、ジュニパーベリーとフェンネル入り燻製サーモン銀メダル乾燥熟成燻製サーモン銅メダルを獲得し、オープン部門で2つの表彰台を達成した。

CEOのエミル・エルシャウグは、ダブル受賞への満足感を示した。

「クラシック製品で頂点を目指していましたが、オープン部門で2つのメダルを獲得できたことは誇りであり、身の引き締まる思いです。特に、私たちの製品の中で最も伝統的な乾燥熟成サーモンが評価されたことは大変喜ばしいことです。」

加工部门主管Kjetil Søyland在团队会议期间得知获奖消息,引发员工热烈欢呼。
