The NVG herring fishery is nearing its end for the winter, while the blue whiting fishery is expected to pick up after a week of bad weather

NVG Herring:

  • Last week, five vessels reported a total catch of 1,544 tons.
  • It is unlikely that significant NVG herring fishing will occur this winter.
  • A few coastal vessels may attempt to fish for roe herring, but no catches have been reported yet.

Mackerel:

  • 420 tons of mackerel were reported, caught by two trawlers northwest of Scotland.
  • The catches were achieved with short and efficient hauls, and both quality and price have been satisfactory.
  • Limited mackerel fishing is expected in the near future, as most larger vessels are awaiting the main season, which is likely to commence around August.

Blue Whiting:

  • Blue whiting fishing has been significantly impacted by adverse weather conditions over the past week.
  • 14 vessels reported a total catch of 27,530 tons from international waters.
  • Fishing activity was reported to be slower on Sunday, but with improved weather conditions, many vessels resumed searching.
  • Several vessels were heading west towards the blue whiting fishing grounds yesterday, and currently, over 20 vessels are active in the area.
  • A significant increase in fishing activity is anticipated in the coming week, with expectations of locating ample blue whiting stocks.

Horse Mackerel:

  • On Thursday, a notable catch of large horse mackerel was reported from the Møre coast.
  • "Vestervik" reported a catch of 40 tons, with an average size of 700 grams, landed at Olav E. Fiskestrand.
  • On Monday, "Kystbas" reported a catch of 3 tons of horse mackerel from Vestland. These fish averaged 650 grams.
