Fisheries landings grow in volume and in value in 2017

Two national reports that NOAA Fisheries has just released profile the increasing strength and economic importance of US fishing and seafood industries in the United States.
In one of these reports, Fisheries of the United States (2017), NOAA outlines that fishing and seafood consumption in the United States increased in 2017, with landings and value of US fisheries continuing a strong, positive trend.

Across the nation, American fishermen landed 9.9 billion pounds of fish and shellfish in 2017, while the US imported 5.9 billion pounds of seafood, up 1.6 per cent more than in the previous year.
The landed volume in 2017 was 3.6 per cent higher than that recorded in 2016 and its value increased by 2.1 per cent, to USD 5.4 billion.
Furthermore, the average American ate 16.0 pounds of fish and shellfish in 2017, representing a significant growth of 1.1 pounds from the year before (7.4 per cent).
NOAA Fisheries points out that overall, in 2017 the highest value US commercial species were salmon, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, scallops, and Alaska pollock and that by volume, the nation’s largest commercial fishery remains Alaska pollock, which had near record landings of 3.4 billion pounds (up 1 per cent from 2016).

The other report, the 11th edition of Fisheries Economics of the United States (2016), provides the most up-to-date economic statistics on commercial and recreational fisheries as well as seafood-related businesses for each coastal state and the nation.
NOAA stresses that commercial fishing and fishing sector (processors, traders, retailers and wholesalers) backed 1.2 million jobs in 2016, and generated USD 144,000 million in sales and contributed USD 61,000 million to the GDP.
The domestic capture produced USD 53,000 million in sales, representing 2 per cent more than in 2015, and supported 711,000 jobs in all the American economy. Lobster and scallops were the species generating the highest income, each of them with USD 46 million growth from the previous year.
