The Fisheries Management Fund (FAP) of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) allocated CLP 408 million (USD 599,600) to artisanal organizations in the Valparaíso Region in line with the principles of value aggregation and productive diversification.
The resources, which will be delivered soon to the favoured entities, come from the contest "Productive Promotion Transfer Programme for Artisanal Fishing Organizations", one of the financing lines with which the FAP supports those who work in the sector.
The contribution of SUBPESCA Fisheries Management Fund (FAP) to the productive diversification of the artisanal sector is highlighted by undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture Eduardo Riquelme in a video broadcast through social networks. In this version of the contest, different groups of Valparaíso presented a total of 34 projects focused on the productive development. Of these, 16 were selected, upon obtaining maximum qualification, according to the corresponding bases.
The favoured initiatives are linked to different aspects. Thus, in one case the resources will finance a mobile sales position for seafood products. To put their idea into practice, fishermen from San Antonio, grouped in a cooperative, will receive almost CLP 40 million (USD 58,800).
The government's plan, called 'Pesca del Futuro', is productive diversification. This means that, together with capture work, artisanal fishermen must look for other horizons to obtain resources for their families. For example, participating in touristic activities, being able to build, prepare and organize cooks or restaurants. (Photo: FAP / Subpesca)
Another project, for almost CLP 39 million (USD 57,300), will benefit a fishermen's union in Zapallar. With the funds, its members will start up a "factory and delivery" of empanadas, in view of the tourist activity that takes place in that area.
A union of seaweed and shellfish collectors of the Mostazal creek, Santo Domingo, meanwhile, will receive about CLP 10 million (CLP 14,700) to perform a pre-feasibility study, with a view to the installation of a multipurpose plant, which would make it possible to process the resources that the members of that group catch, to add value.
The aggregation of value and productive diversification - premises with which the contest is aligned - will give rise to artisanal fishing to project safely towards the future, according to Sub-Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture Eduardo Riquelme, based on instructions from President Sebastián Piñera and instructions from Economy Minister José Ramón Valente.

The first principle takes place when fishermen manufacture, to some extent, the resources they catch from the sea. By doing so, they are "closer" to the final consumer and obtain greater profits, since the number of intermediaries in the chain is reduced.
Through productive diversification, meanwhile, those who work in the artisanal sector have the possibility of improving their income and life quality, by entering into an activity other than the mere catch of marine resources, without changing or neglecting their form of traditional life.
