Ministry and industrial fishermen discussed second anchovy fishing season

Authorities of the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), led by Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Hector Soldi met with the representatives of five of the main fishing associations of Chimbote to discuss the second anchovy fishing season in the north-centre area of the country.
The meeting was attended by the Union of Fishermen of the Port of Chimbote "José Olaya Balandra", the Unified Union of Official Motorists and Fishermen of Peru (SUMOPP), the Unified Union of Captains and Fishing Officials of Peru (SUCAPOPp), the Union of Fishermen of New Boats of Peru (SUPNEP) and the National Coordinator of Retired Fishermen and Active Workers and Fight for Reconquering Social Rights.
The meeting addressed the creation of a working table that drafts and proposes a Bill on Industrial Fishermen that regulates aspects related to the labour regime, social benefits and health benefits of said sector.
Likewise, the convenience of installing a tripartite work table was evaluated: State, fishing workers and business sector, to analyze the current fishing situation and search, together, the best alternatives to the current fishing situation.
On the other hand, although there was no agreement on the position of the associations regarding the immediate closure of the second fishing season, PRODUCE authorities pointed out that Eureka LXXI operation, whose beginning has been scheduled for December 26, with the departure of 13 steel boats and 10 wooden boats-, will be helpful to know the distribution of anchovy at that time and establish conservation measures.
It was emphasized that the measures adopted so far do not lead to the depredation of the resource. In addition, it was indicated that Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) has informed that the current oceanographic conditions are changing favourably in the north of the country. If favourable conditions are evident, fishing activities could restart in the first days of next January.
During the meeting it was also informed on the coordination that are maintained with the Ministry of Labour to enable industrial fishermen to access the use of a percentage of the deposits of their CTS (Compensation for Time of Service).
In addition, PRODUCE authorities stressed their commitment to defending the interests of industrial fishermen, without prejudice to guaranteeing the sustainability of fishing activities.
