The Final Figure for the Second 2025 Season in the North-Central Zone is Based on Scientific Evidence from IMARPE

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) of Peru has established the Total Maximum Allowable Catch (TMAC) for the Second 2025 Fishing Season for anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus), key resources in the north-central zone of the Peruvian coast, at one million 630 thousand tonnes.

This decision was formalized through Ministerial Resolution N.º 00368-2025-PRODUCE and is based on rigorous scientific reports issued by the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE). These reports confirm that the current oceanographic and biological conditions allow for the sustainable exploitation of the resource, ensuring the balance of the marine ecosystem and the continuity of the vital fishing activity.

The Minister of Production, César Quispe Luján, explained that the final quota is determined after a progressive, technical evaluation process. "In early November, we established a provisional quota of 500 thousand tonnes to start the fishing season while IMARPE concluded the verification studies on the status of the resource. Today, based on that scientific evidence, PRODUCE sets the final quota at one million 630 thousand tonnes, which reflects a healthy condition of the anchovy and responsible fisheries management," he stated.

Science Drives Fisheries Management

The determination of this final quota is a result of Operation EUREKA LXXVII carried out by IMARPE between November 4 and 6. During this operation, specialized vessels collected crucial oceanographic and biological information from Talara down to the southern end of the Peruvian coast.

The findings of Operation EUREKA LXXVII confirmed the existence of neutral environmental conditions and an appropriate distribution of the resource, which allowed for the establishment of an evidence-based fishing quota for this second 2025 season.

Minister Quispe Luján emphasized the crucial role of IMARPE in providing scientific support and specialized information that enables the Ministry of Production to make decisions and apply adaptive management to the country's main fishery. "Every fishing season in Peru is supported by rigorous scientific studies conducted by our researchers at IMARPE. Thanks to them, the State can define responsible quotas that ensure the sustainability of the resource and the ecosystem," he affirmed.

PRODUCE has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining permanent inspection and control throughout the season to ensure compliance with fishing regulations and the sustainability of the resource, benefiting the thousands of Peruvian families who depend on this economic activity.
