On Friday 26 November, fish exports from Norway exceeded 107.2 billion, more than the total for the record year 2019.
In 11 years, seafood exports have more than doubled, from NOK 50 billion in 2010, to what is expected to be well over NOK 110 billion by the end of the year.
"Even though the official export figures will not be available until a week from now, we can state that Norwegian seafood exports have reached a new historical milestone. Before the first 11 months of the year are over, according to our calculations, we today pass the export value from the record year 2019 of NOK 107.2 billion. It makes me incredibly proud on behalf of the entire Norwegian seafood industry", says CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council, Renate Larsen.
There are several reasons why 2021 will be a new record year for seafood exports. Renate Larsen highlights the four most important:
- Norwegian seafood meets important parameters such as health, sustainability and climate footprint.
- Salmon, king crab, snow crab, mackerel and herring have all experienced solid growth in 2021.
- Many people have learned to cook seafood at home in their own kitchen during the corona pandemic.
- Norwegian seafood has adapted to new shopping habits such as online shopping and home delivery.
"Norwegian seafood is a robust commodity with a unique position in the global market. Despite weakened purchasing power and closed-down societies, demand is increasing. This is happening despite the fact that the Norwegian krone has strengthened compared to 2020, which is of little benefit to an export industry", says Renate Larsen.
So far in 2021, there has been good growth in important individual markets such as the USA, Italy and Japan.
"Salmon is still our export locomotive, but we have an exciting development in many other species as well. Everyone must now understand how important seafood exports are for Norway, both now and as one of our most important future industries", says Renate Larsen.
