The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) unveiled crucial, standardized data on fishing and aquaculture production, marking a return to evidence-based management and policy-making for the sector.

SERGIPE - On Thursday (October 9), the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) announced the official Resumption of Fisheries Statistics in Brazil. The relaunch includes the debut of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Statistics Bulletin 2023–2024 and a new digital dashboard designed to systematize and consolidate sector data.

The announcement was made in Sergipe, a location chosen for its strategic importance as the country's fourth-largest shrimp producer. Sergipe is also currently hosting key MPA modernization projects in partnership with institutions such as Embrapa, the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), and the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Sergipe (IFS). The event also featured the inauguration of the IFS Aquaculture Laboratory, CEAQUA, in Povoado, São Cristóvão.

Rebuilding the Foundation of Knowledge

Minister André de Paula emphasized the strategic necessity of resuming data collection, which had been inconsistent. "Today, we begin a new phase for Brazil's fishing sector," he stated. "With this, we rebuild the foundations of knowledge, which will support the development of our policies and provide greater security for management, research, and the sector."

The new Bulletin and Unified Dashboard present comprehensive, unprecedented data, making information accessible to government agencies, researchers, producers, fishers, and civil society. Key data points gathered for the 2023–2024 period include:

  • Approximately 893 thousand tons of fish caught in continental environments.

  • More than 889 thousand tons caught in marine environments.

  • A significant 3.1 million tons produced through aquaculture.

  • A historical reconstruction of marine fisheries data from 1950–2022.

  • Current data on foreign fish trade and an assessment of the main commercial fish stocks.

Carolina Rodrigues, National Secretary of Registration, Monitoring, and Research at the MPA, called the launch "just the beginning of our journey toward rebuilding Brazil's fishing statistics." She added that the goal is a reliable system that "values the work of those who make their living from fishing and showcases our country's true potential."

In conjunction with the data release, the MPA also presented the principles and guidelines that will direct the National Fisheries Monitoring and Statistics Plan, establishing a solid foundation for strategic planning and the sustainable development of fishing and aquaculture nationwide.
