The fishing and aquaculture sector, led by salmon, consolidates Chile as a food powerhouse, with the United States as the main destination.

PUERTO MONTT - The Los Lagos Region has reaffirmed its undisputed export leadership, reaching a total of US$5.135 billion between January and September 2025. This figure represents a growth of 2.9% compared to the same period last year, according to the latest Non-Copper – Non-Lithium Export Report issued by ProChile.

The primary engine of this dynamism is the fishing and aquaculture sector, which accumulated shipments totaling US$4.785 billion, equivalent to an impressive 93% of the region's total exports. This leadership underscores Chile's position as a key player in the global seafood market.

Salmon and Trout Drive Growth

The region's star products, salmon and trout, led with exports exceeding US$4.076 billion, registering a 1.4% increase despite market complexities.

Other products that showed notable growth and diversification were:

  • Mussels (Cholgas, choritos, and choros): US$272 million, with a strong growth of 11.5%.

  • Fish and Crustacean Meal: US$99 million, experiencing the largest jump with a 49.7% increase.

  • Jack Mackerel (Jurel): US$93 million, with an increase of 11.7%.

The main markets for these products were:

Diversification in the Agricultural Sector

Despite the aquaculture dominance, the agricultural sector also showed positive performance, reporting exports of US$226 million, which represents a 4.1% increase.

Highlights within this sector included:

  • Bovine Meat: US$44 million.

  • Powdered Milk: US$32 million.

  • Animal Feed: US$31 million.

  • Fresh Cherries: US$30 million.

The main destinations for agricultural products were China (US$37 million), Brazil (US$27 million), and Peru (US$26 million).

Ricardo Arriagada, regional director of ProChile Los Lagos, highlighted the role of the 323 exporting companies in the area, noting: "We continue to consolidate the Los Lagos Region as an export hub for food. Behind every shipment are companies that stand out for their quality, traceability, and commitment to doing things well." Arriagada also emphasized the potential of other sectors that are "growing with innovation and looking at new markets."
