Chloe James, writing for Mashed.com, explains that while people may tolerate lower quality in some things, seafood isn't one of them.

There’s a particular disappointment in receiving a plate of rubbery, dry, or overly slimy seafood, especially when fresher options are readily available. Some restaurant chains manage to offer fresh, high-quality seafood, but others prioritize cost and quantity over quality. Mass importing seafood nationwide results in very few locations serving truly fresh seafood, which can be hard to disguise, even with plenty of seasoning or sauces.

Her article highlights ten restaurant chains that customers often criticize for serving low-quality seafood. While some chains aim to offer affordable seafood, they often sacrifice quality, leading to disappointed diners. Key points from the article include:

Captain D's – Customers frequently complain that the fish tastes reheated or frozen, and the seafood is sourced from farms, often seen as lower quality than wild-caught fish.

Golden Corral – As a buffet chain, Golden Corral faces criticism for the mushy texture of its fish, with reports of poor kitchen conditions at some locations.

Joe's Crab Shack – While known for its fun atmosphere, customers report that the seafood tastes like it has been frozen and cooked in bulk, with crab legs being especially disappointing.

Applebee's – Known more for burgers than seafood, Applebee’s seafood offerings like fish and chips and shrimp are often described as subpar and potentially frozen.

Cracker Barrel – Despite a small seafood menu, Cracker Barrel's seafood offerings are frequently criticized for small portions and lack of freshness.

Long John Silver's – The fast-food chain is notorious for its greasy offerings, with customers describing the shrimp as tiny and rubbery.

TGI Fridays – Customers complain that seafood here, like shrimp and salmon, is often small and over-breaded, with some alleging it tastes frozen.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Company – Even with shrimp as a signature item, diners report that much of the seafood tastes old or rubbery.

These restaurants prioritize affordability and convenience over fresh, high-quality seafood, leading to widespread customer dissatisfaction.
