After 3 years, INIDEP once again carries out a hake campaign in the North Patagonian breeding area

The R/V "Dr. Eduardo L. Holmberg" of the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) set sail this Tuesday from the port of Mar del Plata to start the campaign "Evaluation of abundance of juveniles and spawning hake (Merluccius hubbsi) in the North Patagonian breeding area ”. The last scientific cruise of these characteristics was carried out in 2018.
"It is a very important achievement to carry out this campaign again after three years", remarked the director of INIDEP, Lic. Oscar Horacio Padin and considered that "this year we hope to recover and sustain the campaign agenda with the three ships as an essential input for comply with the requirements of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Federal Fisheries Council and the private sector ”.
With an approximate duration of 27 days and with Dr. Gustavo Álvarez Colombo as chief scientist, the research area extends from 43 ° S to 47 ° S and between the 50 m and 100 m isobaths.
The main objective of the campaign led by the Hake and Companion Fauna Fishery Program is to determine the area of concentration of juvenile hake; obtain indices of abundance by age group of juvenile hake in the North Patagonian breeding area and monitor the reproductive status of hake, estimate abundance, evaluate the structure of lengths and reproductive parameters (fecundity, reproductive frequency, oocyte quality, length / age of maturation).
Researchers will also seek to estimate by acoustic methods the distribution of larval and juvenile pelagic stages of hake, as well as the reproductive concentration of the species; determine the spatial distribution and abundance of ichthyoplankton through the use of plankton nets; characterize the temperature, salinity and chlorophyll fields in the hake breeding and rearing area.
Within the framework of the campaign, the Permanent Station for Environmental Studies (EPEA) (38º 28'S - 57º 41'O) corresponding to the sampling position of the Dynamics of Marine Plankton and Climate Change (DiPlaMCC) project is planned, which includes the study of a time series of environmental variables and plankton.
Likewise, within the framework of activities agreed upon by INIDEP and the San Jorge Gulf-Pampa Azul Initiative Working Group (GTGSJ), an EPEA station will be carried out in the San Jorge Gulf, located near Comodoro Rivadavia at 45º 55 'S ; 67º 20 'W.
