Umitron K. K. has begun offering the smart feeding device “Umitron Cell2” to Maruha Nichro Corporation, the world’s largest fishery operator, as a new technology to help with the establishment of sustainable domestic salmon trout farming.

It is said that a relatively lower water temperature is suitable for the aquaculture of trout salmon. When salmon trout is cultivated in Japanese fishing grounds, all of the livestock has to be shipped out by spring when the water temperature rises, so the suitable growing season is limited to a very short period in winter. Therefore, to achieve a marketable shipping size within this limited time period is a big obstacle to profitable trout salmon farming in Japan. One of the ways to solve this issue is to refine the feeding operation, such as changing the feed timing, quantity and the number of times the fish are fed.

With the use of the smart feeding machine “Umitron Cell1”, Umitron has become a part of Maruha Nichiro’s domestic salmon farming in Saga prefecture via the following solutions:

  • Remote monitoring of reared fish in the fish pen
  • Automatic accumulation of feed data
  • Detailed and real-time adjustment of feed timing and amount

These solutions have now contributed towards establishing an optimized feeding operation.

This year, Umitron has started to offer Maruha Nichiro Umitron Cell2, an improved and upgraded mass-production model. In particular, the Umitron FAI (Fish Appetite Index), a newly developed algorithm that automatically evaluates the fish eating condition using artificial intelligence (A.I.), and allowing for a more detailed and optimised feeding operation that matches the appetite level of the fish. This will in turn further reduce the environmental impact and labor burden on aquaculture farms.

Umitron Cell can monitor detailed changes in the fish pen condition affected by various environmental and ecological factors. With this information, the Umitron Cell optimizes the feeding operation by allowing a flexible adjustment of feeding time, amount, and speed. Traditionally, such detailed feeding management would be time and labour intensive. These operations can be performed efficiently and continuously with less effort using the Umitron FAI.
