In a landmark move for the Russian maritime industry, the innovative crab-catching and processing vessel Kildin has officially been commissioned, marking a new era for the nation’s fishing fleet.

Built at the Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard—a subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC)—the vessel was developed under the strategic investment quota program for the North-West Fishing Consortium (NWFC).

The vessel’s launch represents a massive injection of capital and technology into the region. While the specific contract price for the Kildin remains confidential, similar vessels in this class under the investment quota program are valued at approximately $30 million to $35 million.

A Masterpiece of Distributed Engineering

The Kildin was constructed using the "distributed shipyard" principle, a complex logistical feat where the hull was manufactured in Nizhny Novgorod before being transported for final fitting-out and rigorous testing in St. Petersburg. Following successful trials in the Gulf of Finland, the vessel proved its readiness to navigate the unforgiving environments of the North Atlantic and Arctic seas.

Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo), emphasized the importance of the project during the flag-raising ceremony:

"This is a significant event for both investors and shipbuilders. Vessels like these inspire confidence in the future of the Russian fishing industry and its technological sovereignty. The Kildin is a shining example of how investment quotas translate into concrete results: a modern fleet, careful stewardship of resources, and decent working conditions for workers."

Industry-Leading Specifications

Designed as a full-cycle floating factory, the Kildin is engineered to operate at depths of up to 400 meters. Its technical capabilities set a new benchmark for efficiency in the Arctic circle:

  • Processing Power: The onboard factory can process up to 40 tons of crab per day.

  • Operational Endurance: The vessel can remain at sea for 50 days without needing to resupply.

  • Economic Efficiency: It is equipped to transfer finished products directly to transport vessels at sea, eliminating the need for frequent port calls and maximizing time spent in fishing grounds.

The commissioning of the Kildin is seen as a major step toward "technological sovereignty" for Russia, showcasing a domestic ability to produce highly specialized, high-tech maritime equipment capable of harvesting the ocean's most valuable resources.
