The jigger boat Xin Shi Ji 89 reported on Thursday the death of a crew member while the vessel was carrying out fishing tasks in southern Argentina. This is the chief engineer identified as Manuel Quiquente, 68 years old.

As soon as the information was known, there was concern in the fishing sector attentive to the fact that the crew of the jigger Xin Shi Ji 89 themselves made it known that the chief engineer had been presenting certain symptoms compatible with coronavirus.
One of the hypotheses is that his death is related to the disease and they also made it known that there are several crew members with certain symptoms, which makes them presume that they could be infected.
With the arrival at the port of Santa Cruz of the vessel belonging to the firm Fénix Internacional, it will be determined in the next few hours, with the autopsy and swabbing of the deceased, if he presented Covid-19, and it is expected that the rest of the personnel on board will be tested.

Due to the age of the deceased, it was a person who is placed in the risk group; but at the same time it is essential personnel, since the fishing activity is considered in this way in the parameters of the health emergency due to the pandemic.
The various cases of infections that have been reported in recent weeks in different fishing vessels again generated the claim of sailors and crew members in general, to be included as priority groups to access the vaccination plan against Covid-19.
However, if it is confirmed that the jigger machine officer Xin Shi Ji 89 had coronavirus, it will be the first death on board a fishing vessel due to the disease, which once again calls into question the effective implementation of sanitary protocols before of the departure of the boats and what actually happens when a crew member realizes that they have any symptoms.
