Sweden tests light-guided shrimp fishing to protect the seabed and cut fuel consumption

An EU-funded initiative aims to transform commercial fishing through lighting technology that keeps nets off the seafloor while boosting vessel efficiency.

On the west coast of Sweden, the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems has driven the search for sustainable alternatives in the fishing sector. Facing government proposals to ban bottom trawling in marine protected areas, the "Light Fishing" project (also known as "Light Trawling") was launched. The initiative is backed by an investment of nearly five million Swedish kronor (SEK) from the Marine, Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme, co-funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF).

The main objective is to test whether light can replace the mechanical impact of traditional bottom trawling to catch shrimp and other seafood. The technique relies on advanced light beams to guide species into the trawl while the gear moves suspended in the water column without touching the seabed.

By avoiding seabed contact, the system utilizes a smaller, lighter gear setup that generates less hydrodynamic drag, substantially reducing fuel consumption, equipment wear, and plastic loss in the ocean. Additionally, the technology aims to achieve significantly higher selectivity, reducing unwanted bycatch.

The project alliance is led by Sotenäs Municipality as the project owner. Key partners include the fishing organization FF Norden (affiliated with the Nordic Fishermen's Association and Smögens Nät) representing commercial fishers, alongside Chalmers Industriteknik, which provides expertise in the blue and circular economy.

The concept gained momentum following successful applications in Iceland, where the technology has been effectively deployed to manage shrimp catches. Sixten Söderberg, an 85-year-old veteran fisher based in Smögen with over 50 years of maritime experience and a leading advocate of the local initiative, notes that the current state of the marine environment demands a shift in industry mindset. According to Söderberg, marine species exhibit natural curiosity toward light, making precise light beam targeting a potential landmark breakthrough for commercial fishing.

Despite the prospective benefits, project leaders emphasize that full development involves navigating technical and economic hurdles. Prototype calibration requires adapting the technology to local water density, currents, and visibility conditions along the Swedish coast. Equipment costs remain high, with custom-designed trial tools costing up to 100,000 Swedish kronor per unit. The initial prototype sea trials in Swedish waters were scheduled for May or June, with plans to build three additional tools for continued testing over the coming years.

本コンセプトは、アイスランドシュリンプ資源管理に成功した事例を受けて本格化しました。スモーゲンを拠点とする85歳のベテラン漁業者であり、50年以上の船乗り経験を持つ地域推進者のシクステン・セーデルベリ氏は、現在の海洋環境悪化に対処するため業界の意識改革が必要であると強調します。セーデルベリ氏によれば、すべての海洋生物は光に対する強い好奇心を示しており、光線を正確に制御できれば商業漁業における歴史的成果につながると指摘しています。

项目合作方预计,未来6个月内的测试将明确该技术的实际捕获效率及其对船东的经济可行性。若在虾类捕捞中的测试取得成功,该技术未来还将推广应用于其他商业鱼种,为保护海洋生态与保障沿海社区经济收益树立全新的行业标准。
