North Sea Herring Fishing Continues in the British Zone

North Sea herring catches lead activity in week 31, accompanied by regular landings of mackerel, blue whiting, sprat, and NVG herring

During week 31, the seafood extraction industry recorded a dynamic surge in several key fishing grounds, highlighting operational deployment in the British zone, the Norwegian zone, and the European Union zone. Below is the detailed breakdown of reported landings for each marine species during this period.

North Sea Herring (Clupea harengus)

In week 31, an increase in fishing activity for North Sea herring (Clupea harengus) was observed, with a total reported volume of 6,180 tonnes. Of this total, 3,530 tonnes were caught by foreign vessels. Regarding the destination of the raw material, 1,270 tonnes went to fishmeal and fish oil production, while the remaining volume was directed to direct human consumption. Fishing operations took place mainly in the British zone. The reported fish had an average weight between 180 and 250 grams.

Mackerel (Scomber scombrus)

During week 31, 410 tonnes of mackerel (Scomber scombrus) were reported. Of this amount, 294 tonnes came from a foreign vessel engaged in onboard processing. The catch was discharged at the Tromsø Terminal. The remaining volume consisted mainly of net-penned catches (låssatte fangster) from the Vestlandet region. The catches showed an average weight between 300 and 400 grams.

Blue Whiting (Micromesistius poutassou)

Over the course of week 31, catches of blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) reached 2,930 tonnes. The entire volume was harvested by Norwegian vessels within the Norwegian zone. Notably, the fishing vessel Hargun reported a catch of 2,050 tonnes, taken in the same area as the previous week. The remaining tonnage was caught by Sille Marie along the shelf edge (kanten).

Sprat (Sprattus sprattus)

During week 31, 2,220 tonnes of sprat (Sprattus sprattus) were declared. This volume was caught by four Norwegian vessels operating in waters belonging to the European Union zone.

Norwegian Spring-Spawning Herring (Clupea harengus)

In week 31, a foreign vessel landed a total of 9 tonnes of Norwegian spring-spawning herring (NVG herring, Clupea harengus) at the port of Tromsø.
