The Peruvian Ministry for Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Korean Republic does not require a new round of negotiations, as only some minimal details remain to be seen.
The ministry also anticipated that the deal could be completed by next August, reports Andina.
For Eduardo Ferreyros, the Foreign Trade Vice Minister, the meeting for the FTA Negotiations held during July in Washington, United States, was momentous as more progress was made than expected.
"During this meeting the Market Access and Rules of Origin groups met, who were essentially the ones which were haulting the negotiations," he said.
The outstanding issues are linked to the chapters on the sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and services.
"For example, within the chapter related to services, we needed to define the issue of temporary entry, ie the number of years of experience that a technician must have to be able to access a job in another country," said Ferreyros.
During the negotiations, it was believed that Korea would accept the Peruvian proposal on the issue of fishing products, in relation to the origin of catches.
"Often there are problems in the areas of the ocean where many countries fish, so we proposed to consider only the catches made by vessels with correct registration and flags from the parties," said the Peruvian Vice Minister.
Ferreyros believes that the legal review of the agreement could be short, but no less than four months.
The signing of the agreement could be ready during the first quarter of 2011.
