The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) considers the first fishing anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchoa nasus) fishing season has ended in the northern-central part of the country.
Fishing activities began on June 27, with a catch quota amounting to 1.8 million tonnes.
As indicated by Ministerial Resolution No. 275-2016- PRODUCE, published ON Tuesday in the Official Journal, the measure is applied in the area Between the northern end of Peru's maritime domain and 16° 00' South Latitude, from 00:00 hours on July 27.
The standard sets a deadline for unloading the anchovy caught within the first fishing season at 8:00 on on July 27, 2016; and as the deadline for processing at 23:59 on the same day.
The closure of the fishing season had been recommended by the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE). In its latest technical report, the agency reported that the analysis of reproductive indices of the northern-central anchovy stock indicated the start of the main spawning period of winter-spring, so it recommended suspending the capture activities to protect the main spawning peak.
IMARPE will continue carrying out monitoring and surveillance activities of key anchovy biological, population and fishing indicators and will have to timely inform and recommend the Ministry of Production on the fisheries management measures.
Conservation organization Oceana welcomed the Peruvian Government’s decision but regrets that the resolution issued only affects the industrial fleet. In its opinion, "the reproductive anchovy ban should also affect artisanal and small-scale fleet for direct human consumption because even when capture volumes are lower, their impact is multiplied in the spawning season."
In addition, it argues that "surveillance in the first five thousand miles must be strengthened, as it is in this area where the resource finds shelter to spawn, making its capture easier."
