Seafood exports from Vietnam have been estimated to grow by USD 1.3 billion this year in comparison to the results achieved in 2013 and reach USD 8 billion.
This prediction was made by Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters & Producers (VASEP), whose Deputy General Secretary Nguyen Hoai Nam expressed that seafood exports have been strong and stable from the beginning of the year, especially for shrimp.
The secretary attended the sidelines of the conference entitled Trends in consumption of fishery products in the largest export market; fisheries in the future and social responsibility, organized by SGS in Can Tho city.
Other predictions made by Nam include the value of shrimp export, which according to the secretary can reach approximately USD 4 billion, those of pangasius forecast to reach USD 1.8 billion and those of tuna considered to be USD 480 million.
Furthermore, Nam believes bivalve exports can reach USD 80 million and other seafoods can amount to about USD 1.2 billion.
According to VASEP, in the first nine months of 2014, shrimp exports reached USD 3 billion, representing a 42.3 per cent increase year on year. Besides, pangasius exports reached USD 1.3 billion, a 0.2 per cent growth year on year.
Mollusc exports amounted to USD 61 million, which is a 12.3 per cent increase and octopus exports reached USD 350 million, representing a 13.3 per cent rise year on year.
On the other hand, VASEP reported that Thailand has not overcome shrimp diseases and boycott due to the use of child labour in shrimp industry. But the agency explained that with the downturn of the biggest suppliers along with increase in market demand, stable domestic resources created fruitful results for Vietnam’s seafood industry this year.
There are 165 countries and territories importing seafood from Vietnam. The US, EU, Japan, South Korea and the ASEAN countries are biggest importing markets.
