With a projected annual volume exceeding 200,000 tonnes, the Pleoticus muelleri fishery concludes today after five months of operations marked by a peak in July catches, a late-season slowdown, and favorable biological diagnoses.

The wild Argentine red shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) fishery officially concludes its season in national jurisdiction waters at 00:00 today, Sunday, September 13, having commenced operations on April 16. The campaign yielded a total catch exceeding 130,000 tonnes, consolidating indicators of stability within the historical series of the fishery, as reported by journalist Nelson Saldivia for Revista Puerto and Parte de Pesca.

Technical forecasts and evaluations provided by researchers at the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) confirm that the fishery maintains acceptable biological parameters and that the resource remains in good health. Between January 1 and September 8, combining landings from Chubut and the national fishery, cumulative catches reached nearly 180,000 tonnes. Added to this will be the final stretch of the year once fishing is authorized in Rawson, projecting that 2026 will close once again around or above 200.000 tonnes.

Fishery Evolution and Monthly Performance

Commercial operations began north of parallel 41°S, outside the Permanent Hake Juvenile Closure Area (AVPJM). During the second half of April, a limited fleet of freezer vessels and offshore fresh-fish trawlers reported 1,753 tonnes. In May, following the start of surveys within the AVPJM and the formal opening of four sub-areas on the 29th —two off Península Valdés and two south of the San Jorge Gulf— landings rose to 6,081 tonnes.

The highest activity levels were recorded between June and July:

  • June: Declared landings reached 38,975 tonnes. During this month, the temporary relaxation applied exclusively for 2026 regarding the 72-hour rule for offshore fresh-fish trawlers proved significant. This initially caused a dispersion of landings toward ports in Santa Cruz, Río Negro, and Mar del Plata, though the fleet ultimately prioritized discharging at the nearest ports to the fishing grounds to avoid losing trips unnecessarily.

  • Julio: Represented the peak of the season, reaching landings of 45,558 tonnes.

Slowdown, Weather Factors, and Bycatch

Starting in August, yields entered a declining phase with 28,934 tonnes declared (16,624 tonnes less than the previous month). The combination of fishing effort from modern vessels, adverse weather conditions, and resource dispersion accelerated the depletion of detected concentrations. Concurrently, an increasing percentage of hake was observed as incidental catch (bycatch).

Faced with this trend, the management authority implemented progressive sub-area closures and conducted new surveys. By the second half of August, most processing plants in Chubut considered the national season concluded.

Closure of Operations

In early September, the National Directorate of Fisheries Coordination and Inspection ordered the closure of Sub-areas 4 and 5, effectively shutting down red shrimp fishing across the entire AVPJM.

Subsequent guidelines established Wednesday, September 9 as the deadline for dispatching vessels to fishing grounds, setting the complete halt of operations in national waters starting at midnight today.
