Fisheries across the Russian Far East are mobilizing fleets and expanding retail networks to stabilize food security as scientists forecast a natural dip in migratory stocks.

The fishing industry in Kamchatka Krai has officially entered its mobilization phase for the 2026 salmon run, with crews readying vessels and processing infrastructure ahead of the season's traditional kickoff in late May or early June. This year’s preparations come as regional authorities and scientific bodies, including VNIRO and KamchatNIRO, signal a period of natural decline in salmon populations affecting the entire Pacific coast.

Forecasted Yields and Regional Distribution

Data from maritime researchers suggest that the upcoming season will follow a cyclical downturn in aquatic bioresource stocks. The projected total catch for the region is set at approximately 117,500 tonnes. This yield is expected to be distributed almost equally across the peninsula's shores:

  • East Coast: 59,500 tonnes

  • West Coast: 58,000 tonnes

Yulia Morozova, Chairperson of the Kamchatka Krai Government, emphasized that while the numbers are lower than previous record-breaking years, the industry remains resilient.

"We're already seeing a more conservative forecast for this year's salmon run—around 117,000 tons. And it's important to understand that this isn't a localized situation: these trends are currently being observed across the Pacific Coast and are linked to the natural cycles predicted by scientists. Meanwhile, preparations for the salmon run in Kamchatka are proceeding as planned—fishermen are preparing their fleet and infrastructure."

Safeguarding Local Markets

To mitigate the impact of the conservative forecast on local consumers, the government is diversifying the "Kamchatka Fish" project. The initiative aims to keep prices stable and maintain high availability of seafood for residents by expanding the variety of species offered.

Under this expansion, major industry players like Okeanrybflot are working to bolster supply chains for non-salmon products, such as squid and whitefish. Furthermore, the distribution network is growing; the Pionerskaya Poultry Farm retail chain is the latest to join the project, providing more points of sale for discounted aquatic products.

Morozova noted that the focus is shifting toward a broader market strategy: "The Kamchatka Fish project continues: we'll be expanding our product range, including whitefish, working with Okeanrybflot to further develop squid supplies, and increasing the number of retail outlets to ensure the product remains accessible to residents."

Despite the smaller run, the region’s massive investment in its fleet ensures that the 2026 season remains a cornerstone of the local economy, supported by a diverse portfolio of Pacific resources.
